Extra Fine Nib Ink Review: Diamine Oxblood

This is review #119 in my series.  Here's the YouTube video:

Post-recording notes: Surprisingly quick and easy to clean for a dark red! Plain water was all I needed!  The color dries to a very brown shade with a bit of red - I think it goes more brown as it ages.  The images are pretty close to what my eyes see.

And here is a screen of the final result, for those not interested in the video:

Great job, Liz

This is inks looks nicer on the screen than in person, I once received a note in this colour and that cured me. :D

So, what's Mama Makhabesh's name? And where's da goat? 🐐

 Perhaps it's more brown in person than what the screen shows?  Anywho, I can understand it not being for everyone, especially with the lack of shading.

As far as I know, her name is "Mom". :)  Da goat is for the next adventure, not this oily one.  I think our next adventure will be a search for something - not entirely sure what.  I've only got 2 unused "bits" of this oily adventure left - the winding up of the story.  I think the "bit" after that will be the "inciting incident" for the next adventure - as yet nothing more than a vague notion in my head - but I have ~9 days to figure it out...

Great review @LizEF - but I'm safe on this one. A rare ink that I actively don't like, don't own, and have no intention of ever getting. I love Diamine's reds, and a lot of their browns too, but the combination does nothing for me.

Actually, thinking about it, I suspect it's because just don't like  the whole burgundy/maroon colour family, and I have no idea why.

:)  Saving wallets everywhere!  (Except where I'm not. ;) )

Yeah, I think we all have colors like that - probably some long-forgotten childhood trauma involving green Jell-O for me...

Interesting comments from others. 🙂  I like this ink colour a lot, and my Pilot Elite 95S with deep red barrel used to be ‘permanently’ filled with this ink. (I think mine has Platinum Classic Ink Lavender Black in it at the moment, whereas my wife's is inked with Diamine Oxblood now.)

This ink can be prone to forming crud on the nib if the cap seal is not outstandingly effective. The Pilot Elite 95S's cap usually seals very well, but there was once — just once — which I mustn't have put the cap on fully and properly, and next time I uncapped it… oh, what a clustercrud it was! Of course, it's perfectly harmless all the same, and easily washed and/or wiped off.

Thanks for the review!

:) Color-preference is an interesting thing.  I'm OK with the color, but would prefer more red, less brown, and some shading.  One thing that can't be denied, though, is that it does a good job of lubricating the nib, and for EF (especially Japanese EF) users, that's a big plus!

I found it too brownish, as well. Plus the nib crud.

It's hard work to tell which is Old Harry when everybody's got boots on.

Apparently it needs more than 4 days to form nib crud. :)  Or a different pen...

Construction projects, or grumbling sphynxi?

I love this color group, and may have had a sample at one point,  but I have so many other burgundy-ish inks....well, maybe just ome more sample.  If I hadn't sworn off new inks and pens.

Thanks again for another great review.  👍🏻

My latest ebook.   And not just for Halloween!

My other pen is a Montblanc.

Oh, good question.  Maybe I was hearing a sphinx-attack! :)

It formed overnight in my Lamy Al-Star (broad nib)! And it looks a lot like dried blood if you get it on your hands... 😬

Thanks for the review!

Thanks for the review!

That supports the theory that formation depends on evaporation.

You're welcome!

I love the burgundy colours that Diamine produce (about half a dozen) precisely because of the deep brown element- I've not found a comparable ink from any other company. Funnily enough, when writing with KWZ #3 yesterday I was thinking that it looked like Oxblood minus the brown- you might enjoy that ink!

Thanks!  I'll add KWZ Red #3 to my list of things to sample ..... Hmm.  Can't find a Red #3, except iron gall - is that the one you mean?

Sorry, yes, that is the one. Well behaved for an IG. When dry it looks like how I'd imagined Diamine Writer's Blood would look (Writer's Blood had a lot more brown to it than I saw in the early reviews).

Interesting!  Thanks for the confirmation.  I've added it to my list with a link back to this thread so I can comment after sampling it.  (Assuming it's still available in a year or so when I start ordering more inks.) :)

Sounds good :) I think you'll like it. KWZ apparently intent to keep all regular inks perpetually in production, and this ink reviews particularly well too, so should definitely be safe.

Here's the line width measurement. The line is one of those used for dry time.  Magnification is 100x.  The grid is 100x100µm.  The scale is 330µm, with eleven divisions of 30µm each.  The line width for this ink is roughly 300µm.
