Montblanc rollerballs and permanent ink - options

Recommended Posts

I am fortunate to have several respectable fountain pens, though the nature of my work (e.g., crappy copy paper, hospitals, sometimes long stretches without use and a periodic hard start, etc) is such that the sometimes fussy nature of FPs isn't always practical.

I also prefer permanent inks and thus stick to pigmented gels for daily quick (retractable pen) use.

I am trying to enjoy my "nicer" pens more. I don't terribly mind the way MB rollerball refills write, though they are comically not even waterproof, much less anything else-proof (at least the Pacific Blue refill I tested... I assume the newer Royal Blue refills aren't any better in that regard).

Before I start experimenting on an exhausted MB refill some time and trying to refill at home, does anyone have any current suggestions on what I might use that (a) maintains the same high quality as the factory refills, (b) is permanent / strongly fraud-resistant whether ISO-certified or not, and (c) ideally utilizes the screw-in installation that MB uses for their rollerball and fineliner refills?

Thanks in advance.

Veri, I switched to using Pilot Precise v5 RT refills in my MB rollerballs. Just be gentle when screwing them into the section. They will " self tap" but don't force it.

An interesting thought - thanks for the reply. Without looking, I thought that the v5 models weren't waterproof/permanent, though?

I will add that an MB black fineliner refill was actually quite water-resistant though not tested with any other solvents. Running under hot water for minutes turned the ink to a quite beautiful dark blue which was perfectly legible. A Mystery Black rollerball refill offered ~50% water-resistance, whereas the blue rollerball washed away.

Pilot's product description states that the Precise v5 refills are water resistant, for what that's worth. They don't seem to smear on the page like fountain pen inks.

@Ueno808 it is interesting  point. So the Montblanc  takes the Pilot v5 RT refills/ do you have to adjust any thing?

I have tried to refill a rollerball by removing the end cap and with an eyedropper I filled the spongy  barrel with ink. It works too but permananet or wrong ink will contaminate  ink and it never work. So idea is if you have the refill  and you know what Montblanc ink it has. So if you have the same mont blanc ink it will work.

If you try to mix other inks like Noodlers ink with something  it never work. It happened to me .This is due to different chemistry they use.

I didn't have to adjust anything, just gently screwed it in. Too much torque could damage the internal threads.
