Given that parts of India have a quite a hot and humid climate, which is perfect for mould growth, have any of you had mould growing in your inks? If so, then which brands made those inks?

So no one has ever had a bad bottle of ink here ?

I've had problems with 3 inks so far -

  • Krishna Overcast Deep Lilac (the ink name was very appropriate with a silver sheen, but it solidified into floating dense strands in the bottle and even in the pen, a Pilot Metropolitan. Pen is now inked with Camlin Scarlet Red and writes very well)
  • Rohrer and Klingner Verdigris  (developed an obnoxious smell and clogged the feed repeatedly after full cleaning jobs on the pen, a Click Aristocrat. The pen is inked with Bril Turquoise Blue now and writes like a dream)
  • Bril Green (my local store had 2-year-old stock and the inks had become completely watery and the dye seemed to have separated and settled at the bottom - maybe not mold but some other issue)

I have other Krishna, R&K and Bril inks that are fine... could be that only these particular bottles had issues.

only once - it was a penhouse blue ink. When the bottle was half-empty.

i contacted the shop and they promply offered to send a new bottle. they said they had modified the formulation recently and newer ones won't develop molds.

United States of America.
Ink came from an Amazon Warehouse.

I meant which state. Anyways as you most likely know, Monteverde has some problems with mold.

I have no way of knowing which Amazon warehouse it originated from.
The seller on Amazon was "Amazon Inc" indicating that it shipped from one of their warehouses.
There are many Amazon warehouses in the surrounding states where I live, 25 At my last count before COVID hit.
Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Delaware, DC, etc...

Sorry for the poor wording, but I was essentially asking what the weather is like, where you live. Also, judging by your reply, I guess that the bottle arrived with mold.

My apologies, I did not understand.
I live in the mountains. It is usually fairly dry unless a storm makes it over the mountain range from the east and gets to our property, moderate temperatures. Today it's in the 70's.
Yes, it arrived with mold and was quite an unpleasant surprise.

While I see nothing fibrous on my nibs/ feeds/ inks, I do notice greenish spots in the areas where the barrel screws onto the section. Does anyone else have this?

I never had mould, not in the UK. What does it grow on anyway?

The worst ink problem I ever had was some Raduga purple developing slime.

Can you get an effective preservative agents to add to ink? I was thinking about replicating the famous Parker Solv-X, but that allegedly contained Phenol.

Can you get even a very weak solution thats enough to be effective in a 50ml bottle without adversely affecting the ink?

Mould ought to be able to grow on most organic substances, it's a bit strange, as I am seeing these specks on plastic/ metal surfaces. Aspirin dissolved in water ought to be able to kill fungi ( due to the evolved salicylic acid)

Just a thought here, but one must remember that mould and bacteria spores are pretty common in our atmosphere.  With that, an open bottle of ink could easily become a host.
