Extra Fine Nib Ink Review: Sailor Kujukuri Coast Hamanasu

This is review #102 in my series.  Here's the YouTube video:

Post-recording notes:  Bits of greenish-gold sheen can be seen in the zoom.  Cleaning was easy with plain water, but did take a bit longer than usual (red + sheen = more time). :)

And here is a screen of the final result, for those not interested in the video:

Really love this colour. It reminds of R7K Sketchink Jule and Super5 Australia...

Good job, Liz

I like that it can sheen a lot but still be well-behaved (no smearing after dry, no flow problems).  I assume you can find it in Japan, near this "Kujukuri Coast", but that's the most I can tell you about it.  This is one of @A Smug Dill's gifted samples.

Woohoo! A Sailor Kujukuri Coast ink finally makes an appearance in ink reviews. :)

This ink has more than a passing similarity to Sailor Shikiori (né Jentle) Okuyama:

As far as I've seen, this is a ‘limited edition’ — which has nevertheless been re-released in the ‘new’ rectangular-footprint 50ml Sailor ink bottles recent — exclusive to a single Japanese retailer. I think I came across (online only, of course, as opposed to in physical visits to bricks-and-mortar stores) a couple of sellers of inks in this series in Hong Kong and China (or was it Taiwan?), but they are rare as ‘invisible’ clear UV-fluorescent fountain pen inks.

Thanks for another excellent review (and scan without a green cast, haha)!

I endeavour to be frank and truthful in what I write, show or otherwise present, when I relate my first-hand experiences that are not independently verifiable; and link to third-party content where I can, when I make a claim or refute a statement of fact in a thread. If there is something you can verify for yourself, I entreat you to do so, and judge for yourself what is right, correct, and valid. I may be wrong, and my position or say-so is no more authoritative and carries no more weight than anyone else's here.

Oh, yes, those do look very similar.  I suspect most of us could be happy with the more-easily-obtained look-alike. :)

Gladly!

Fluke, I'm sure.  I still haven't figured out the whole scanning thing - why it sometimes works and other times not.  Same with the GIMP color correction - I've found that sometimes I can do it in various sequences, and get the color pretty good, other times, nothing seems to work...  Sigh.  Learning experience.

Thank you as always Liz for a fab review of an ink I'd never heard of!

I like it, but I don't love it. I think it's the green gold sheen I'm not too keen on - I rather like the base colour, especially in the dry time test where it looks much pinker.

Not one I need, especially as I have others in a similar vein, and of them, I think my favourite is probably Diamine Manggis.

@mizgeorge Diamine Manggis sheens harder and also forms crud like mad, though. It's the only new bottle of ink I've come across that is full of crud under the cap when I first opened it; the bottle was tightly sealed enough that there was nil leakage in transit making its way from Malaysia to Australia, so I don't think it can be attributed to an undue amount of exposure to air.

That's so weird. Mine arrived (also from Malaysia) without so much as a hint of anything cruddy, and I've just checked both the pen it's in and the bottle and it's perfect. I'm going to leave it out and check it again in a few days.

FWIW, I just opened my Hobonichi and flipped back to the pages with this ink, and I didn't see the sheen unless I angled the paper (lighting right now is very indirect), so this isn't a super-sheener where you can't see the color of the ink - it's just that the sheen isn't hard to see, and I lucked out with camera and lighting angles. :)

But I totally understand not needing to buy another ink - I've been there for a while now - but oddly, it hasn't totally stopped me...

Oh, Dill gave me this one, too, so eventually, I'll be able to compare.

Seems I've missed a few reviews.  This is a very nice color, and I can easily see the sheen. But I already have Oku-Yama, as well as Iro Yama- Budo, sooo....

Thanks for another great review.  Even if I am not persuaded to BUY an ink, I like watching these.  But those feather close-ups are scary.  😱

My latest ebook.   And not just for Halloween!

My other pen is a Montblanc.

 Keep in mind it's practically newsprint, and it's super-magnified.

Here's the line width measurement. The line is one of those used for dry time.  Magnification is 100x.  The grid is 100x100µm.  The scale is 330µm, with eleven divisions of 30µm each.  The line width for this ink is roughly 330µm.

For those who like the color of this ink, but who can't find an easy / affordable way to purchase it, Diamine Writer's Blood turns out to be a near twin - color-wise.  You'll have to tune in to review #214 to see about other attributes. :D :P
