Extra Fine Nib Ink Review: Robert Oster Thunderstorm

This is review #100 in my series.  Here's the YouTube video:

Post-recording notes: Cleaning was quick and easy.  The colors were so interesting I decided to do some chromatography. :)  I know it looks black in the pictures, but in person, I can see the slightest hint of blue.

And here is a screen of the final result, for those not interested in the video:

Thanks as always Liz. Another excellent review :)

I think find the chroma more interesting than the ink itself - I wish there was a bit more evidence of some of those underlying shades coming through, but this is sometimes the case with dark inks - and I don't think it's just because it's EF.  I have many blue-blacks (and use them a lot) but I'm not feeling the need to add this one.

Congratulations on the century!!

On the swatch card, in the Jinhao writing, you can see a bit of color more easily.  It's very subtle, but this ink is also very close to those three unobtainiums: The "Undocumented Mix", Noodler's FPN Van Gogh Starry Night Blue, and R & K Blau-Schwarz.  Not sure this pic from the USB microscope does the trick, but, FWIW:

:D Thanks!  And there's another century +3 (at the moment) to go! :yikes:  I may have a slight ink (sample) problem... :lticaptd:

Hmm.  Looks like no one's done a regular review of this ink.  Maybe I need to put it in my Lamy Al-Star - I have an "EF" (not that EF), F, B and 1.1 stub for it and could show a broader range for it.  The camera might pick up the color better from fatter lines...  And yeah, the chroma is gorgeous, and hinted at in the writing itself.

Pretty chroma, good dry time, slinky writing, cool name.  This tempts.  It is the blackety-est looking blue black I ever saw.

Thanks for the review and the story!

My latest ebook.   And not just for Halloween!

My other pen is a Montblanc.

Congrats on the 100th anniversary!
Not sure about the colour though, might be too black for me. The copy paper pic looks really really black, the Jinhao pic looks totally different and much more appealing. This is one I need to see in person. Time to dive into the ink sample stack… might be in there somewhere 🙂

The reason I didn't dismiss this one like I did the Pilot Mixable Colour Blue-Black is because I can see (in person) a slight bit of blue, even from the EF nib - it's just that the camera won't pick it up once things get this dark.  I'm certain I personally would prefer this ink in a wider nib (same with those three unobtainiums), where the color is easier to see.  Also, the more absorbent, and less white the page, the less you see the blue in the ink.

Yes, I recommend anyone who likes classic blue-blacks try this one out to see how it does in their pens.  If it is in your stack, I'm sure your more thorough review style would do it more justice (should you decide to do a review).  Either way, I'd be curious what you find. :)

Here's the line width measurement. The line is one of those used for dry time.  Magnification is 100x.  The grid is 100x100µm.  The scale is 330µm, with eleven divisions of 30µm each.  The line width for this ink is roughly 280µm.
