An alphabetic nib, or a nib-shaped alphabet

I have two large sheets of a beautiful, dry and crunchy handmade paper, which on one side have the imprint left by the clothespins when they were hung out to dry. I bought them in Italy during a trip, but I don't remember where ... This paper is superb with my pigment inks. With the others, the ink feathers and bleeds through the opposite side.

 

For some time I have wanted to try my hand at writing an alphabet, like the intertwined ones that I see every now and then on the net, and I thought that a half sheet of my special paper could serve the purpose. I chose the white sheet (the other is an almost yellow straw color) and Montblanc Permanent Blue ink in my now trusty 149 Calligraphy.

 

The idea was to arrange the letters of the alphabet so that they draw the outline of the nib of a fountain pen. I chose the nib of an OMAS as a "model", but now seeing the result I understand that I would have done better to choose a nib with wider shoulders, because the profile would have ben more evident.

 

Anyway, here it is!

Wow, this is incredible. Thank you very much for sharing it here. I really like the idea of a nib-shaped alphabet, and, as usual, your calligraphy is superb.

Once again you show me what I might one day be able to achieve with my own 149 Calligraphy if I keep working on my skills and my creativity. Thanks for the inspiration.

 

I would not have noticed that the profile is somewhat slim, but I do agree that a broader model nib would probably have accentuated the nib shape. But judging from your message, this seems to have been your first venture into this kind of illustration, so I would say this is alright for a first try 😉

Thinking of broader nibs, the 149 Calligarphy's own one comes to mind.

I wonder if there would be a way to use it as a model and work the figure-eight pattern on its nib into the flourishes of the letters that make up the alphabet-nib.

Nabado: I have no idea of how to work the figure-eight pattern of the Calligraphy among the mess of lines of this divertimento, but I like the suggestion, and I think it is worth a try!

Beautiful work. I showed it to my MB 149 Calligraphy so that it knows what I expect from it. It eagerly drew some figure eights to warm up.
