New Parker 51 section/cap fit problem?

Hi, I’ve had this Parker 51 reissue for just a few weeks, and have noticed these grooves in the middle of the section—anybody else?

(trying to upload a photo)

Sorry to hear about that... It seems you are a first one reporting such an issue on FPN...

But poor quality of NG51 is not surprising at all :(

I guess you may consider sending it back and getting a full refund... and then purchase an original P51 ;)

I can not see these "grooves" as the plastic is pretty dark.

Were they there when you got the pen or are they a new development?
If they were there when you got the pen do they look like a manufacturing defect/flaw?

BTW, can you comment on how the pen works for you?

yes, this happened to my teal one after a few weeks of light use.

Just to be specific, "this" meaning that the hood cracked?

No, just grooves described by the op. These are different from the slight hood wear that happens with the original "51"--these grooves are deeper and more visible. Bad design.

Interesting.

I have not noticed any such markings. From your photo there appear to be three parallel lines.

Do these go all the way around the section? They look as if something has been forced into the plastic, so it might be something on the inside of the cap.

Or possibly the screw section of the cap was twisted against the section - that doesn’t seem likely since the lines are so far away from the screw grooves in the section.

I’ve got a P51 Demi in Plum, and I love it

That is great :)

If you buy a full-size P51 you will not be disappointed either.

Until you know the facts about what these "grooves" are and their cause how do you know that?

Or are you just trolling?

Sorry for the poor picture quality! I just noticed them yesterday as I was writing outside in the sunshine, but now I can’t unsee them. I doubt that they were there when I received the pen. It seems as though when the cap gets screwed on, something is also screwing into the plastic section—the cap liner?

I have a P51 Demi in Plum, a P75 sterling ciselé and I also purchased the new Deluxe Plum in a Fine point. The Demi writes like a dream, as does the P75. The two newer pens write a broader fine. The steel nib is fussy—it has a “sweet spot” that forces me to rotate the pen at an angle that I’m not accustomed to. It writes well at that angle. The new gold nib is not fussy. Furthermore, I let several pens sit un-inked for maybe 3 weeks, and the steel nibbled P51 was the only one that didn’t start right up.

Oh, that’s too bad—May I ask what you did about it? I’ve contacted the online retailer from which I purchased it, for starters.

I’ve been thinking about a full sized one in the grey, but can’t decide on another aerometric or a vac...

I have numerous "51"s with scratches and gouges all over the hoods and barrels.
I have "51"s with the tips of the hood broken off.

Should we retroactively claim that the original "51" was a bad design made of poor materials?

Yes, the lines go all around the section. My uneducated guess is that the cap liner is screwing into the section as I screw the pen shut. The lines are deep scratches.

Those lines seem (approximately -- I don't suffer from OCD to the same extent as some others) at about the level of the edge of the inner cap on my pen. I wonder if one side of your pen's inner cap is jutting out a bit?

Other than that, I'm afraid I have no suggestions.

Except to note that I have a couple of the grey "51" pens (one demi and one vac-fil) and like them both very much.

Good luck!

Not at all... I've seen basic version quite a while ago and was not impressed with the pens'  quality...

And all further feedbacks here on FPN just proved my impressions.

It is jut my humble opinion, and everyone makes his own choice :)

About facts: the fact is that NG51 is just an average quality overpiced pen not worth to be named Parker 51 or even Parker at all ;)
