Both the capring and the clip ball are made from "cold rolled" sterling silver.

The cold rolling process  makes the surface more dense,  hence creates a  hard surface layer, reducing greatly the risks of wear.

Thank you both for your insights. I suppose my experience with clips not affecting the body is simply because I never use the clips in that way -- and neither did their original owners, apparently. It is strange the problem has never really been addressed by manufacturers, either through the shape of the underside of the clip (a flatter, longer, or gently-angled protrusion at the end?) or as Francis has done, through having the ball touch another hard surface. Speaking of the latter, the design looks unconventional, but quite charming still.
