Oldwin Classic and Art Deco Celluloids

Hi All,

I've become and more and more interested in the Oldwin Classic and Art Deco Celluloids and would like to try picking one up in the near future. I feel like I've read what there is available out there on people's experiences with both the pens themselves and the customer service and it seems rather mixed. I am really intrigued by the design of both the Classic and Art Deco models particularly those made in the OMAS celluloids. I fully expect the need for a nib tune at this point in life but would expect the quality, fit, and finish of the pen to match the price. I'm curious to hear from folks who own or have owned Oldwins and what their overall impressions have been of the pens and the buying experience. If you've owned both a Classic and Art Deco I'd be interested to hear your impressions of how they differ in size and feel and which you'd recommend.

Cheers.

The pens are great and pretty well made. I prefer the classic over the art deco just for the fit in my hand. Nibs have not needed tuning out of the box. you can either get M or M/F, but when I last bought one it was only M.

Each pen is handmade so thickness and overall length can vary somewhat. If you look on the Mora Stylos site they have dimensions and you can look in the archive for more details.

One issue for their pens is there is limited effort to make patterns in materials line up. This is fine for some materials, but in others it can be very noticeable and off-putting for some. Specifically the arco models and the wild materials are often off a bit. Most of the other patterns are "random" enough to not be an issue.

Since partnering with The Pen Family (formerly ASC) on the 90th anniversary arco pens, there has been some comments about quality control. Personally I did not like the feed, or the ring so did not buy one. To me the older models were more charming.

You'll pay a lot unless you buy from the site or luck into a used pen somehow. I would not expect to see many more OMAS celluloid pens other than those materials in stock currently.

Here are some old photos. Comparison shots to an M800 and 149

Beautiful pieces. Thanks for sharing. Love that Tibaldi Impero. I've seen pieces he did in Black Lucens and Blue Royale. Simply stunning.

THIS !!!!!!👆

Very important.  Be careful you get an original Oldwin and not one of these pens.

As for the true, "legitimate" Morastylos Oldwin pens is concerned, I far prefer the Classic to the Art Deco models.

Thank you! Sorry if I'm being dense but the ones still sold directly on his site would be legit Oldwins correct? I know ASC has special collaborations they also sell. It looks like "Reptile" is coming soon. That doesn't appeal to me.

Not necessarily.......be very careful.

They are easy to distinguish by your carefully examining the photos of the pen.

They are all legit Oldwin pens, but represent different eras or approaches. The big tell is the ring on the body which you cannot see when capped. I am also not a fan of the newer nibs although they look similar.

The older models were hand turned and use a regular C/C approach, not a captured converter/piston.

The celluloid pens on the sight right now look like the traditional models. I am not sure about the massive set, but assuming you are not looking to slash out $24,000 on that option.

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth

There is still chemistry for processing regular chrome (positive) films like Kodak Ektachrome and Fuji Velvia, but Kodachrome was a completely different and multistep beast.

Ah, but how to get it processed - that is the question. I believe that the last machine able to run K-14 (Kodachrome processing) ceased to operate some 15 or so years ago. Perhaps the film will be worth something as a curiosity in my estate sale when I die. 😺

Take a lot of photos!   If the film has deteriorated or 'gone off' in any way, you can use that as a 'feature' to take 'arty' pictures - whether of landmarks, or people, or whatever.
