Hey folks, it's 2021. Did we finally found a replacement for this ink?

I remember back in 2009, I came across 25 bottles of MB RG. Sold them for $35 shipped. Had people hating on me for selling them at that price, haha. I wonder if those same people regretting not buying it...

Funny how everything turns around. Looks like the joke is on them!

I think it's quite easy to make a replacement and saw a recipe a long time ago on another forum. Start with a royal blue and yellow then add a bit of black until it's murky enough. It helps if you have a swab of the original color.

I lifted this from another forum, but it worked well for me

The only thing bad about it was that $30 bottle of golden yellow that I've found to be an otherwise basically unuseable ink.

BTW, I used current Royal Blue(in the 60mL squared off bottle) and old black(from a 50mL rounded bottle).

Heck, I've been watching Ebay...ink can be a sickening addiction and I'd pay a fair price for a bottle of the real stuff if I could even find one for sale!

I wouldn't have thought that specifically using MB Yellow was crucial.

I think we've had this discussion before, does Diamine contain a dupe for it? Sherwood green?

On Pelikan 4001 ink, there was this mix of brown and green that made it a pleasant shade, maybe some black could do for more fidelity.

There's this German place talking about similar colors, with some tweaking the could  pass as Racing Green.

Looks like MB BRG is not replaceable.

Yes it is. The recipe I mentioned is easy and makes a very good copy

The Diamine ink is pretty dead on, and several others are dang close.

I'm not sure on this one. I do know Golden Yellow is really the only yellow(as opposed to orange) ink I have, albeit it is a bit of an orange leaning ink. There aren't a ton of yellows out there anyway.

At least with using older MB Blue and Black, I'd think we'd have at least a chance of getting the same dyes used in Racing Green. Of course, since Golden Yellow is ~20 years newer, it's hard to say without actually analyzing(something I'm pulling some strings now to get what I would need to hopefully look at this sort of stuff).

If you've got golden yellow then agreed you may as well use it but if you can't get it then it's probably not going to make any difference what yellow you use.

Hmmm...I think I may have gotten a replacement and didn't even know it.
I looked through my inks last night doing inventory for a PIF and found my bottle of "Penbbs#502 - The Rains" ink.
It looks dead on like "MB-RG"!!

The Diamine is very nice.  Very close - to my eye.  I've had a bottle for quite a while.  I also made my own but I can't remember what I used any more....

I'd really like even a partial bottle of "the real stuff" but it seems scarce these days even on Ebay(and the associated likely nutty prices)

Heck, Penman inks are easier to find these days!(as long as you're willing to pay the going rate). With that said, though, Ruby and Emerald in Penman seem...quite uncommon...  They're the ones I'm missing.

I’ve never tried MB Racing Green, but I recently (Dec.) acquired Birmingham Pens Pincushion Moss Everlasting Ink (a nano pigment ink), which seems to fall in the range under consideration here, as does perhaps its companion ink Atlantic Seaweed.

I have no connection to Birmingham, but they are little known on FPN for the most part.  I have had good experiences with their inks over the years, both their old and new formulations.  Their colors are often “in between” and difficult to pigeonhole, and often have unadvertised water resistance.  I’ve been using their nano pigment inks regularly in FPs for the past 3-4 months with no difficulties:  I’ve had Black Ice continuously in a Lamy Safari for 3-4 months, and Pincushion Moss in an Italix Chaplain’s Tankard for 2-1/2 months with no problems.  They both start immediately even if left unused for a week or two, and couldn’t be better writing ink in those pens.

Hi, that is a beautiful ink color. I have been looking for a green pigmented ink to go along with my MB PB and my amazing Sailor Sei-Boku inks. Big fan of pigmented ink and their water resistance!

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth

There is still chemistry for processing regular chrome (positive) films like Kodak Ektachrome and Fuji Velvia, but Kodachrome was a completely different and multistep beast.
    • Ceilidh
Ah, but how to get it processed - that is the question. I believe that the last machine able to run K-14 (Kodachrome processing) ceased to operate some 15 or so years ago. Perhaps the film will be worth something as a curiosity in my estate sale when I die. 😺

Take a lot of photos!   If the film has deteriorated or 'gone off' in any way, you can use that as a 'feature' to take 'arty' pictures - whether of landmarks, or people, or whatever.
