60's style fountain pens

Don C

Recommended Posts

Hello Everyone!

I'm brand new here :D and not very computer smart. :(

I remember back in the 60's, Schaeffer had a very inexpensive, cartridge style fountain pen we used for school work. If I remember right, they came in a variety of "clear" colors (red, blue, green, etc.). I realize that was a very long time ago, but does anyone know if Schaeffer makes anything similar to that now days? It seems the only thing I can find that somewhat comes close to that is the Javelin at about $25.

I appreciate any help you can give me!

Don,

The cartridge pens you refer to are sometimes called school pens. They are relatively easy to find and the current Sheaffer cartridges fit in them just fine. Send me a PM if you are looking for a few.

Being new, some may tell me not to point you here. But I will anyway! I ordered this pen and am waiting for it to come from China.

I thought I would risk the $5.50.

Is this the type you are asking about? The "NEW" 90's school pens are junk, got one for my daughter and ended up throwing it away. These are what I remember from the early 70's in high school.

These are often available on ebay at a decent price. But it sounds like Todd can fix you up.

Re: jmkeuning's post

$5.50 postpaid seems reasonable for this pen, the last iteration of the Sheaffer School Pen. Of course, these pens were made in the mid-to-late 1990s, not the 1980s as the website description says. If it was from that 1980s, it would be slender with a metal cap.

To Don C: The metal cap ones are slightly harder to find, but common enough that you don't have to go out of your way. Expect to get more than a few offers from folks here at FPN.

The all plastic School Pen is OK, but the metal cap ones were among the best cheap cartridge pens of its time and certainly the best American-made starter pen for young writers. I prefer the No-Nonsense pens myself, but I bigger hands. The School Pen is a better fit for folks with smaller hands (and kids).

An addendum: Pakmanpony is probably refering to the Reaktor -- possibly the worst pen to wear the Sheaffer name. Lousy nib and it was the only Sheaffer cartridge pen not to take Sheaffer carts. Avoid this pen at all costs.

I don't have the camera on hand, but I have that blue thing as well, at a similar price and with similar reasoning. It's certainly not as good as the 70's starters or the NoNonsense, and I found the "fine" point to be distressingly wet, but it's not a HORRID pen and can probably be tamed. I'd have a look at some of the online pen retailers (Swisher springs quickest to mind), and possibly even send them a note of inquiry. It can't hurt too much.

It's also worth a try putting a Want To Buy up on the Marketplace. I suspect a few of us have one of the old '60s-'80s numbers we wouldn't mind parting with for not too much cash. Heck, I think I've managed to get about 6 of them in as many months.

(Reads back in thread)... yeah, like that Todd person. Just like that.

I remember using these pens in school in the 1970's---they leaked rather badly, if I recall correctly, and were not comparable in quality to their German counterparts, the Gehas or Pelikanos. But, you could buy them at any drugstore for a buck or so.

Hi Todd!

Sorry. I haven't been here for awhile. I'm not sure what "PM" means. I did find what I was looking for on e-Bay. It is on a "card" with the pen and 2 ink cartridges in a plastic bubble. It says, "Sheaffer Economy Cartridge Fouintain Pen - $1.00" Obviously, VERY old! LOL It is the colored, but clear barrel with the chrome cap. It appears to be "NOS". Never opened! I was hoping to purchase more, but have been out bid on the others I wanted. It seems the $1.00 pen now goes for $10.00 UP!!!!!
