New Sheaffer Icon Model

Gold was standard in the somewhat distant past.  It adds a lot of snob appeal too.  While I'm not certain I believe its almost required for a pen to be "vintage" or "collectible".  With the passage of time its become much less important to me.

I received a pair of new Sheaffers for Christmas. One of them is one of these new Icons. I have to say, I like it. It's a nice, substantial pen, with good heft in the hand. The build quality seems pretty good. The nib is the same as the Taranis, and feels similar in use- smooth but very firm. I got the medium, which runs a little fine. There was a broad offered on the Taranis, but not on the Icon, which is a shame. 

 

I went with the black and red, though I had a tough time deciding on the color. The red accents are really set off well but the satin black finish. The shape reminds me of the older Javelin model, and is definitely inspired by the Legacy. It's a nice size. The section actually appears to be pretty much identical to that of the Taranis, but this pen feels thicker overall. Mainly because the barrel doesn't taper the same way as the Taranis. 

 

Overall, I think it's a nice pen, and a great replacement for the Taranis or Prelude as the entry level to the higher end of Sheaffer pens. I've included some pictures comparing the size to that of the new Legacy Heritage model.
