New Sheaffer Icon Model

Recommended Posts

So Sheaffer appears to have a new mid-range pen collection, the Icon. Looks a bit like a cross between a Taranis and a Legacy. Could be interesting, some of the color schemes are pretty slick. Looks like it has the same hooded nib as the Taranis, which I liked. I found it on the FPH website, but can't link to it. The Pen Boutique also has it listed. I like the black and red, and the green.

Interesting mashup of pens - Legacy barrel, Taranis style nib, Targa clip (sort of), but it works.  Attractive pen.

I like it!  The size/girth reminds me of a PFM (along with the squared ends) and the curve of the body seems to recall the slope of the early OS balances.

Maybe the approximate girth of a NoNonsense?  I am planning to go to the Chicago Pen Show next week and am hoping it will make an entrance there.

Out of stock most everywhere I've looked, but just found at Atlas & picking up a black & red w/'M' nib today.

Now to pick a nice dark blackish red, perhaps revealed thru halo or shading. Any suggestions?

This thread does not make any kind of sense to me.I looked and couldn't find any of these pens.As it happens I have been trying to track one down

The taranis is from about eight years ago and the icon from about four years ago so far as I could tell. Please someone put me right.

The name Icon is a bit on the nose but if this is Sheafer's version of a p51/lammy2k then I can see what they mean. It's a modern pen design with the ergonomic part of the Taranis.

As I inferred above, Atlas Stationers has an apparently good stock of them. I just got USPS notification the Black/Red 'M' I ordered Tuesday is to be delivered Monday.

I will say, before actually having it in-hand, I wish the red 'strip' on the nose was the same narrower width as the one on the clip at other end. Looks a bit...I dunno, ¿ungainly or incongrous? in the pictures, but we'll see.

I've already ordered a couple of dark red inks to try in it. Pretty sure it's gonna be DeAtramentis Standard Poppy Red, or Diamine Noel Sheen.

I think you're right. I've swapped my order for the blue version. Slightly less in your face. Good luck.

I must be missing something, not as good looking as the Prelude IMHO and I hope that the nib writes better than it looks.

Each to their own I guess

The nib is stainless steel.I still don't know what that means, Cross's have a steel nib as do other makes, what does stainless steel mean?

Because this has the Tarinis nib and ergonomics I believe it is a world beater. The design is very modern.

I think that nib would be sexier'n Hades if it emerged or retracted after top/cap is twisted. Seems an interior screw mechanism would be e-z to mold, whole nib/section/converter-reservoir moves up `n down to deploy or stow.

I'm far from expert on who uses what on or in what, but in simple terms, it means they're made of an alloy of steel with other metals which, final product resists rusting, along with other features Stainless provides. Fountain pen inks, most of them anyway (e.g. not the gall inks) are water-based, and plain steel nibs should not be left 'wet' or exposed to humidity without some form of anti-oxidant protection (usually a plating process).  For comparison, gold doesn't rust, so doesn't need that kind of protection. Hope that explains It to you adequately.

Thanks for the reply. It does help. But why then aren't all the nibs stainless steel? I do find my fine taranis as smooth as glass and fines can sometimes be a bit scratchy. It performs just a well as my MB's and Lammy2k, but at a budget price, which makes me think they may have cracked a major nib problem.

On the other hand the luxury resin of MB's is no different to the plain plastic in other makes. So is this 'stainless steel' tag just a term that other makers could use too?
