It might have a slightly green-ish sheen

Yes! Wasn't expecting it so it was a bit of a surprise.

Add lightness and simplicate.

I actually ordered but cancelled since I already have 3 M40x/20xs. The pattern on the barrel was tempting but I ended up resisting. My interest from here lies with nibs that offer character with my writing. My most recent thrill has been with a Montblanc No22 with an OB nib. I really enjoy that nib.

I have more than enough F and M nibs.

Which ink did you choose to go with the Pelikan?

I'm a sucker for any colour in the dark blue-green range. I've lined up my ever-growing stash and:

Rohrer & Klingner Verdigris is slightly too blue (but not a bad match), Diamine Eau de Nil is too light and too blue, Diamine Aurora Borealis is too green, KWZ Baltic Memories might work but goes down too dark on this nib, J. Herbin Emeraude de Chivor might work but I've used up my sample...

The one I felt paired best with the M205 Petrol was Diamine Smoke on the Water. The base colour is very close (ever-so-slightly more green than the M205), but the huge amounts of sheen just match it perfectly to the darker patches in the swirl... Also, it is glorious pouring out of the pelikan B nib. It's what I have it inked with and written the sample below with.

I have a question, how much of that lovely color is from the flash.

My marbled blue W.Germany 200 was ....as eyeball light as my early '90's Germany one, not the intense blue of the flash.

One could hope you know.

In reference to P. T. Barnum; to advise for free is foolish, ........busybodies are ill liked by both factions.

Ransom Bucket cost me many of my pictures taken by a poor camera that was finally tossed. Luckily, the Chicken Scratch pictures also vanished.

I completely forgot about this year's Pelkian SE and I placed a order for one since I'm a fan of Pelikan m205 series. It reminds me of the ocean at night from the photos.

Tomorrow, and tomorrow, and tomorrow

It really is that stunning. I attach a photo in indirect sunlight, no artificial lights. It's a very deep colour, so to me even more interesting than the lighter ones, such as the brown. From some angles it looks blue, in others green... Incredible.

Writes the same as my M205?  Hmm, never mind!

Add lightness and simplicate.

I received my Petrol today, and it is really beautiful, with swirling shimmering bands of teal. One thing I would do differently when I ordered is to ask for a pen with a lot of blue or with the blue on the same side as the nib. There are two bands of mostly black on mine, and two gorgeous bands of blue. But the wide blue bands are on the sides of the pen so I don't see them when I'm writing. Otherwise, for someone who loves this color as I do, Pelikan really got the color right. My pen also has the most lovely smooth fine steel nib.

Thanks for posting this. I also try to match ink and pens—sometimes.

I'm still trying to figure out how to list all my pens down here.

I like the color, but I gotta say that it's absolutely nothing like the pre-release photos, or the description that it was "marbled".  It's not a blue-black marbled material, it's a swirly chatoyance that is pretty on two sides and completely black on the perpendicular sides.   Neat, I'm OK with it, I buy pretty much all the recent LEs, but it's the first Pelikan that really didn't look like the pictures.

As for 1st ink, I might go with Colorverse Monsoon Storm or Robert Oster... something.  Denim?  DIamine Smoke on the Water is a great suggestion, though.  I have an untried bottle of that.

I tried taking some photos and, bright enough light, it goes from 50-60% black to color all around.  Maybe I got a really dark one.

got mine too!

I'm happy with what I've got. The colour is a really nice shade of dark tealish blue, and the pen is what I expected it to be.

There is no point in complaining on the fact that these types of resins will have a lighter side and a darker side, that depends on the nature of this type of material, which is sort of polarized, so will pick up the light depending which way your turn it.

I've tried to take pictures in daylight (no flash, which would alter the effect with excessive shine back).

Mine comes from Fritz Schimpf with a lovely BB nib.

This is a comparison with two M200s blue marble old style derby cap (pre 1997) and one blue marble new style, crown cap

"There is no point in complaining"... well, there is, when the photos look like a marbled barrel vs a chatoyant one...

If I really didn't like it, I'd send the pen back.  I like it fine.  But, the fact remains that this edition has the biggest differential between pre-release photo and actual appearance that I've ever seen.  I don't _usually_ pre-order, though, so maybe there have been plenty of others.  Usually by the time I order, there's lots of photos of the real thing out there.  I ordered the M200 Pastel Green off the promotional photo and that looked pretty much exactly as advertised.

This post just cost me 14 bucks. Saw this ink and HAD to order it. Looks like a slightly darker Sailor Yama Dori, but with the sheen turned up to 11. Like a velvety dessert for the eyes...mmm. Very nice!

NPD! Well I couldn’t resist...

The marbled petrol is quite difficult to photograph, it’s darkish and radiates a quite subtle luminescence of aquamarine swirls.

I’ve switched out the steel nib to a rhodium plated ‘585’ 14k gold nib,  which is a perfect fit.

and there it is in the middle of my flock... you can see it’s quite dark to the eye.. quite a bit smaller than the m600 (or indeed the m800), and slightly bigger than the M101N or the vintage 100, but very comfortable for my hand.

It’s a keeper! 🙂

I just got it a few days and it looks much brighter in some parts in-person than photos. Yes, there's still a 1/4 black part but it's a nice calming turquoise reminds me of the sea.

Tomorrow, and tomorrow, and tomorrow
