Sailor Manyo Kakitsubata review

A Smug Dill

For those who have both, is this ink similar to Waterman Mysterious Blue? Which I just got a sample of, and I like quite a bit.

though it seems like there are fewer reviewers here (is that my imagination)

I may have gotten it wrong, but I counted 11 different individuals who have posted at least one ink review so far this year.  That's better than my imagination thought.

Not sure if you're still looking for an answer on this, but no, I don't find them similar at all.

I put the two of them side by side for you. The paper is Rhodia. I have a crappy phone, so pardon the "no frills" shots.

There are some significant differences between Waterman Mysterious Blue ("Mystery" for short) and Sailor Manyo Kakitsubata ("Kitty" for short - I rename my inks when I can't pronounce their names - doesn't everybody?). Both are excellent inks and well behaved. Kitty seems much more lubricated than Mystery is, and perhaps a bit wetter.  Also Kitty seems to have a bit of chromo-shading to it (on Tomoe River and Cosmo Air Light papers) whereas Mystery does not shade nearly as well.

With that said, however, Waterman Mysterious Blue, Inspired Blue and Serentity Blue are my "test inks".  I can count on the consistency from bottle to bottle.  Whenever I receive a new fountain pen, or am trying out a new paper, I also use one of these three inks because of the consistency.

But I must say that, of all of my inks, I love the Sailor Manyo ink line.  I have every one of them and really like them all - a few more than others.  I love the watercolor effect of the inks.

@sombrueil-- Waterman Mysterious Blue is a teal-leaning blue black (on some paper it looks like a blue-leaning green).  I would call Manyo Kakitsubata more of a dark blue violet.

"It's very nice, but frankly, when I signed that list for a P-51, what I had in mind was a fountain pen."
