Sorry 'bout that 😁 Based upon your assessment I'll move it to the purple section.

Haven't found any reviews.

I didn't expect you would. The absence of reviews doesn't change the colour of an ink, though. :)

The swatches on retailer site look straight black.

From the manufacturer's web site:

Tassie Seasons' Pepperberry is a deeply dark black-blue ink, with a slight violet hue,  ...‹snip›... Pepperberry is Van Dieman's darkest blue ink to date, bordering on jet black with broad and wet-writing pens, but exhibiting blue and violet hues under light and a dark red sheen.

The average RGB value seems to be approximately (32,32,39).

True. But if I can't see what it looks like I can't see what it looks like.

Sailor Chushu - unobtainium

That ink is very much currently in production and readily available to retail customers.

I was actually going to order another (discontinued 50ml) bottle or two of it yesterday, but ended up removing it from my cart minutes before finalising my order.

There is a distinction between ink reviews, and images/swatches of an ink.

Lamy Crystal Obsidian

What about PenBBS #274 Obsidian, then? Not that you're likely to find reviews of that ink at the moment.

Isn't obsidian (the rock, not the ink) supposed to be black?  That picture looks like a gorgeous blue-black.

Nope, the sorry's on me: I saw your comment, didn't trust my eyes, and did a light wash with a damp q-tip over it. This ink is very much a dark, dark blue, not showing much in the way of purple. Just the light in my room, I suppose.

(I'm only picking the PenBBS Fountain Pen Inks that I can add to my shopping cart right now, to check that they are not unobtanium.)

I think so. I remember checking out a few loose pieces of it at a local market, because I have both Lamy Crystal Ink Obsidian and PenBBS Fountain Pen Ink No.274 Obsidian, and wondered which one would be closer. Neither ink is as black as the stone.

Yeah. It's been a while since I've written with it, though, so I can't remember how dark or black it is coming out of a Japanese Fine nib.

I’d say Shigure is a better closer-to-black purple.

I'll be revisiting all the selections to weed out any hurriedly chosen inks that are in the neighbourhood of black, but exhibit too much of the other hue. For example black blue blacks are in, whereas blue blacks are out. At this point relying upon multiple reviews, and input such as yours.

Add lightness and simplicate.

BTW: On obsidian, there actually can be a number of colors at play (not just solid black), depending upon the mineral content of the magma that produced it. In shards or translucent pieces, you often find a green/turquoise hue, and others appear a bit less frequently.

If Shigure is close enough to black to qualify, you might also consider Sailor Kobe #9 Suma Purple.  To my eye, it is blacker and more somber than Shigure in a fine or wet nib.

Thanks to all for your valuable suggestions and insights.

The method has been to look at several reviews of each ink, and see if the inks fit my subjective criteria. I have tried to eliminated those which exhibit an obvious hue.

Those marked ? indicate that I'm not convinced, but there may be a possibility, and I'll check again. Often it seems nib dependent.
