Thanks! I really like this kind of rust/copper color, but I don't want to deal with crust...hopefully there'll be a non-crusty dupe out there one day.

Just use a fountain pen that seals the nib and feed well when capped. Ink crud doesn't form when  there is no or minimal ink evaporation between uses.

I endeavour to be frank and truthful in what I write, show or otherwise present, when I relate my first-hand experiences that are not independently verifiable; and link to third-party content where I can, when I make a claim or refute a statement of fact in a thread. If there is something you can verify for yourself, I entreat you to do so, and judge for yourself what is right, correct, and valid. I may be wrong, and my position or say-so is no more authoritative and carries no more weight than anyone else's here.

You could also try Monteverde Copper Noir - I don't recall any crud from that - and the color is very similar (more similar in person than the pictures show, I think).

Hmm, I'll try this out with my long-neglected bottle of Diamine Ancient Copper. To think I'd been using it in my less favorite pens (poor sealing being a factor) because I didn't want to have to wipe off the crud on the nicer ones that have a better seal.

Thanks! I will put it on my ink list :)

So glad to hear that I'm not the only one who gets such bad crusting from this ink. I've honestly never had an ink do our that much and I had wondered if I had gotten a bad bottle!

:) I actually like this enough that I may be able to put up with it - not sure.  I'll have to test it in other pens and see if it's any better in the crusting department.  Another ink I really like crusted in my Sailor Pro Gear Slim - which I would believe is super-air-tight, which suggests @A Smug Dill's hypothesis may not be the only factor.  That ink was actually Robert Oster Green Lime - a nice bright green - not the color we usually expect to crust...

Oh, that's interesting, the only other ink I've had crusting with its ro jade, so another brightish green

Fascinating!  If only we had a chemist with free access to the needed instruments.  They'd be able to explain everything, I'm sure.

Here's the line width measurement. The line is one of those used for dry time.  Magnification is 100x.  The grid is 100x100µm.  The scale is 330µm, with eleven divisions of 30µm each.  The line width for this ink is roughly 270µm.

Per the discussion here:

...I've prepped a slide of Monteverde Fire Opal to see whether crusting inks look interesting under the microscope.  I'll reply with what I find either Saturday or Monday, depending on how long it takes the slide to get interesting.  (If it's not interesting by Monday, I doubt it ever will be.)

Well, I looked at the slide today and it was quite interesting, so I'm posting four images. :D  Can't say it reveals anything about the crusting behavior of the ink - beyond the existence of crystal-like shapes - but it does look cool:

Monteverde Fire Opal likes the desert:

Monteverde Fire Opal seems to be growing grass at the edges of the desert:
