These are some great photos.

I'll confess a little relief that they are experimenting with sparkling inks. This is a brand of ink that I always buy, even though I'm no longer allowing myself to buy inks. Their colors are gorgeous and subtle. But, I'm not a fan of sparkling inks. I have a handful, and that's enough.

I'm a bit relieved that I'm "off the hook".

By the way, I'm no expert, but your Japanese is gorgeous! I've been trying to learn Chinese, which shares some of the writing system. My writing is nowhere near as beautiful, even when I'm directly copying!

Proud resident of the least visited state in the nation!

Your presentation, photos, handwriting, and the ink are all beautiful - thank you.

Thanks a lot. Glad everyone here enjoyed my ink showcase (i would use this term as its far from a proper review but still ideal for some great visuals).

If you have any tips for photographing ink I am sure many folks here would be interested!

The best ever tip I can give is take pictures in daylight, prefrably in shade (eg: next to a large window where direct sunlight is not hitting the subject). It gives a lovely lit image with soft shadows. Some examples of what I am talking about - Example 1  -  Example 2

Though I will confess my images here are shot in a studio as I do product photography as my day job, so its different lights and camera and stuff but a mobile phone and finding good light would also result in a great looking image.

Thanks. I am also not really into sparkly inks and was unaware of this ink being a shimmering ink. Have only purchased 2 bottles myself and have 2-3 others that were shared by friends to tryout. Probably might have skipped it if I knew it was shimmer. Maybe the shimmer part got lost in translation (ordered direct from TAG Stationary japaneses website). Still a lovely shade of green that I can make use of. I use dip pens as well so its not going to stay unused even if it doesn't go into a fountaina pen.

My japanese writing is just copying from the insert that came in the packaging of this ink. I practice calligraphy and gifted with decent handwriting as a base to start with so some of these things work out better for me with things I do.

Thanks a bunch - I was hoping you were going to talk about lighting. And a tip from a pro, even! 🙏🤘

Yes I would put lighting and composition above the hardware (camera, strobes, etc) for a better photograph. Editing skils are desireable and very necessary aswell. For phone, I use SNAPSEED app for edits, if and when I take pictures on phone. I think there are plenty of tutorials on YouTube that can be used to see things getting done, mostly those are about food photography but the same principles can be applied for pen, ink, notebooks. So look around for "food photography with natural light" videos.

Yes, I use Snapseed too, mostly for cell phone pics but also with my Olympus in the field sometimes, especially when I don't want to bother with editing on my laptop. I'm still a novice with it but it is very amazing what you can do with Snapseed and yes, there are some great video tutorials.

Thanks much for the pointers! I'm starting a new ink photography thread in just a minute ...
