There seem to be several modern manufacturers who offer pens in this tapered shape. Does this basic body style originate with the Shaeffer Balance, or are there earlier precedents?

 

The Moonman and the Edison Premier are my favorite  modern examples. I prefer the Moonman section just a little bit more.

Do like the looks of the  tapered 1940s Sheaffer Balance.  I am not aware of an earlier

pen model, for I am not knowledgeable about vintage pens.  I am not partial to slim 

pens, so this Moonman is about as slim as I am comfortable using for extensive

writing sessions.  In my collection I own approximately 5-6 slimmer fountain pens, with

the HongDian dark blue Forest series pen being my latest (won in a drawing).

Today it's been the Noodler's ebonite Konrad (Methuselah's Pine Cone Ripple, flex nib) with diluted Noodler's 54th Massachusetts; and the grey/Herringbone Pilot Metropolitan Retro Pop (stub nib) with Akkerman Delfts Blauw (which I think, sadly is an LE ink and doesn't seem to be available anyplace in the US at the moment).

Today I'm using a Pelikan m1000 green stripe <F> with Kon-Peki. Awesome combo, Kon-Peki looks best in a wet nib.
