Today it's mostly been the new-to-me French Blue Lamy Safari, F nib.  Finally got all of the unknown red ink which was in it (took about 2 days of soaking and flushing), and inked up with Lamy Crystal Benetoite.  Good combination for its inaugural run in my stash.  But also used the 1911S Wicked Witch, music nib, with Sailor Studio #943 a bit.  Still not quite sure what to make of the nib -- it's really wet but also hard starting on occasion.

"It's very nice, but frankly, when I signed that list for a P-51, what I had in mind was a fountain pen."

I bought myself a used Pilot Custom 742 on a whim, to give the FA nib another go, and confirm whether it was mainly my lack of skill and understanding or mainly the nib's poor performance characteristics that caused our ruinous conflict two years ago.

Now that I have a better appreciation of how the FA nib should be used — specifically, Pilot clearly stated is meant to only be used with light writing pressure and no more than that, even if the degree of elastic deformation in response to such is underwhelming, never mind in what language and hand the user is trying to write — I really wanted to see if it writes finely enough with no pressure (my first FA nib did), yields readily enough to when pressed lightly, and snaps back quickly enough when the light pressure on it is reduced; and whether it has anything to offer over and above, say, a more mundane Pilot Custom soft nib or a Justus 95 nib at the softest setting.

Well, I don't hate the FA nib now that I understand its handicap, and when I have low expectations it is pleasant enough to use, I suppose — and the Custom 742 pen body is actually quite nice, as opposed to the disagreeable Custom 74 pen body — but it doesn't really do much for me or my handwriting.

I endeavour to be frank and truthful in what I write, show or otherwise present, when I relate my first-hand experiences that are not independently verifiable; and link to third-party content where I can, when I make a claim or refute a statement of fact in a thread. If there is something you can verify for yourself, I entreat you to do so, and judge for yourself what is right, correct, and valid. I may be wrong, and my position or say-so is no more authoritative and carries no more weight than anyone else's here.

I used my new M405 with Kana-cho the last two nights and a couple nights last week, as well. Now that the Kana-cho is settling in, the sheen is becoming more noticeable, even on the copy paper at work (we're back to using the Hammermill). Would probably be more apparent with an M or B nib but it feels more like a secret the EF is sharing with me.

It's hard work to tell which is Old Harry when everybody's got boots on.

Narwhal LE Ebonite with a custom architect nib, Diamine Grape

I have one of these and cannot believe the quality for the price. The brown ebonite almost seems to have a touch of purple in it.

I'm fairly constant about the pens I use everyday:

Nakaya Piccolo Cigar, kuro-tamenuri, EF, Platinum Carbon Black (I changed the ink today; it was Noodler's Black.).

Newton Pens pocket pen (not sure of the model name, was made about eight years ago), Pilot #10 PO, Noodler's Black.

Moonman C2, Pilot #10 PO, Iroshizuku Take-sumi.

My two most recent acquisitions, the Parker 51 plum (1949) being my first vintage fountain pen, and the Sheaffer Valiant Snorkel (1950s) being my second. Both are medium nibs. The 51 writes like a dream, while the Sheaffer could use a little smoothing. Still love it, though!

Too me the Shaeffer appears to have the nib bent backwards.. I've got a 70s parker which I really like. I wonder it the reintroduction will affect the value of the older ones? Congratulations on the new old pens!!

All of the Sheaffer pens I looked at with Triumph nibs had the upturned point, so I'm fairly certain that is normal for this particular type of nib/filling system combo. I love the way it looks, too--so unique compared to my other pens.

Hmm I'm not sure. I wouldn't think the new 51s would drastically affect prices of the old ones, as I think there will still be a demand for the old ones. I'm sure a lot of people who regularly buy the vintage 51s were the ones who immediately went into rage mode when the new ones were announced lol, and will still supply a steady stream of demand.
