Is this MB 146 legit?

Hello,

I have come across this pen on an internet auction. The price is fairly good, but not too good.

It is Montblanc 146 LeGrand Gold.

Is it legit? What to look for and what to ask the seller for to be sure?

Piston fill? If it is  it probably real MB 146.

Yeah, it is piston filled according to the description, but there are no detailed photos of the mechanism. I have seen some Chinese MB which have a twist-off cap at the end and a sketchy knob under.

Are there any more pics of the white outer box, I am looking for an MB label/barcode?

However, at face value everything else looks ok.

You could ask the seller to send you a photo of the certification card, or the serial number (with a few digits hidden for his security aswell )

This is the last picture I didn't post here. Sadly, no label.image5.jpg.648a47870d9968927e09267cf0a99179.jpg

Are there any important things to look for? Should I ask for something?

It should have a serial number on it on the metal clip band that sits around the top of the cap. The letters and numbers are very small but easily readable with a lupe x10/x20.

I would ask for a pick of the flaps at the end of the box or a copy of the receipt.

I must admit the pen looks right and as has already been said, piston filled fakes are said to be around although I haven't seen one.

The Service Guide should also have been stamped by the MB shop

What do I do with that number?

The warranty card, right? I will ask for that.

The nib  seems too nice for a copy.

Try if it is gold or steel using a magnet. If it is gold is definitively not a copy.

Ask for a photo of the ink window and also for them to screw the blind cap all the way out and show the piston threads. Also, ask for a photo of the ink window with the piston all the way down.

AFAIK, the dodgy Chinese copies don't have ink windows, so if that's missing(or they won't show you) I'd be suspect. If it's there, and you can see the piston in the window when fully extended, I'd guess it real.

There's an entire forum devoted to MontBlanc pens here:  https://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/forum/69-montblanc/

and a thread devoted to spotting fakes:  https://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/topic/24727-tips-on-how-to-spot-a-fake-mont-blanc/

SBRE Brown has info:  https://youtu.be/o0Bp5d4psAs  https://youtu.be/4gRJfGgFO58

Hope all this helps.

My understanding is that a blind cap is a discrete, removable object, which covers a piston knob. My 234 1/2 has a blind cap.

Add lightness and simplicate.

FWIW, the nib looks really nice; generally fakes aren't as nice, imho. If you pay by paypal and credit card you have some security if it isn't up to your expectations!!!

I agree with those who say it looks authentic. If it's an ebay auction then you're fully covered by them if it turns out to be not as described - seller would have to send a prepaid return label and issue a full refund on receipt.
