"Generic" Bock#8 nibs

I find it odd that Magna Carta would design a nib to fit a Bock housing that is longer than a Bock nib.

It's certainly an interesting decision.  IMO kudos to them for not choosing to be just a Bock clone.

I just received my tracking number from Brian Gray for one of the new Edison Collier Grande.  Brian was quite patient with me:  my email provider kept bouncing his invoices because they came from intuit.com, otherwise I would have had that tracking number two days ago. 🤦‍♂️

Unfortunately the only Bock #8 that I have is in a Leonardo MZ Grande, and IIRC that's just a Bock nib, not an entire nib unit, so I won't be able to verify any claims that the units are interchangeable.

I was recently checking this again and came across The Turners Shop in UK which is selling the MagnaCarta #8 steel nibs at £47 in Bock housing which is actually in ebonite, as also the feed.

So this is confirmed.

A Ranga threaded for Bock #8 might be one of my next choices (actually if I were Ranga, I’d put these nibs in my offer, as a Bock gold or Titanium #8 tends to be a slightly too expensive option on a Ranga).

I’m also wondering whether this nib might fit the new Jinhao X159, but that may require pulling the Jinhao nib out of its housing as I doubt very much this pen would take a Bock housing, and even then it is not certain the feed would match the nib.

I've not been able to find the MagnaCarta #8 nibs on the Turners Workshop - I was wondering the opposite though...would a JInhao X159 #8 fit a Ranga threaded for a Bock #8? sorry if this sounds crazy - just new to fountain pens - had an Amazon Basics for the last 9 months and the last 2 I've ventured into Parker 21's and Jinhao and Asvine etc.

The Jinhao X159 does not have a “#8” nib, in any manufacturer's (including but not limited to Bock's, JoWo's, and Jinhao's) official terminology and anyone's informed and reasonable assessment.

Why not just take the path of least risk, and source a proper Bock type 380 nib unit for your Ranga pen, and get it reground to your liking if that's what you actually desire? (Disclosure: I have no affiliation with FPNibs, and don't even like it/them as a vendor, but) FPNibs, for one, is able to offer you all that commercially.

If you're new to fountain pens, I'd imagine at this point you just want products that fit and work right off the bat, instead of messing around, trying to jam a Chinese nib (i.e. the piece of bare metal) into a German nib housing (but with which feed?) for which your Indian pen is tapped.

Paying more for certainty is better for staying interested in the hobby, instead of trying to “save money” only to get frustrated by the wasted spending and effort.

Then you'll be well advised to beware of misinformation online, often blindly repeated and spread by misguided and/or recalcitrant wishful thinkers abound.

I endeavour to be frank and truthful in what I write, show or otherwise present, when I relate my first-hand experiences that are not independently verifiable; and link to third-party content where I can, when I make a claim or refute a statement of fact in a thread. If there is something you can verify for yourself, I entreat you to do so, and judge for yourself what is right, correct, and valid. I may be wrong, and my position or say-so is no more authoritative and carries no more weight than anyone else's here.

lol - knew it sounded too good to be true! - I'll likely go with a less expensive #6 nib if I go ahead and order a Ranga - just seems with such a large pen that the 'large' nib would be appropriate. I had not seen that the X159 was not a true #8 - thanks for the info! Much larger than my other nibs though....but to be fair my Parker 21s are hooded of course!

Brave new world to explore!

I think  in 2021 i can make the no8 nib in house with ebonite feed and housing.

You did, thank you, and your nibs are becoming a new standard, congratulations - but

1) please also provide them with Jowo #8 housings, a number of penturners would prefer those over the Bock housings

2) also develop EF, please

Missed this earlier on.  Some of us have no sense (me for example).  I have two custom Ebonite Ranga Majestics.  One with a Bock Ti #8, and the other with an MB 149 14k nib -FNF housing. :D

Add lightness and simplicate.

It seems that they have a special housing with the threads in the middle. However, I have read that there was an old housing with threads at the end. Just found a comparison picture old and new housing on Amazon:

So, my wish came true, available in EF. I saw that they also exist in full silver, not only bi-color. It is surprising that you now can get a #8 steel nib for less than $5.
