Pelikan 4001 Brilliant brown ink in a 1930s vacumatic

Pelikan 4001  brilliant brown ink has some red in it. Should I therefore _not__use it in a 1930s vacumatic?

It's not a red ink, it just has a slightly reddish tint at times.  It should be perfectly safe in any pen, as are all the Pelikan 4001 inks.

Ink it up and scribble away.

 

The more cautious approach would be to fill the pen, put it in a ziplock, roll it up, sandwich it between two rectangular, dense fruitcakes, put it a tupperware box and leave it in the garden shed for a week or two. If you don't hear any loud bangs, and see smoke it'll be OK. 🤪

There are some who say that red/purple/brown inks are more likely to cause problems (especially in pens with sacs) simply due to the chemistry of those dye colors.  That didn't stop me from putting De Atramentis Rose (not only red/pink, but a scented ink as well) into an Azure Blue Pearl Sub-Debutante.  Did I maybe have to re-replace the diaphragm sooner than I might have had to?  It's a possibility.  But a risk I was willing to take, because it looked so doggone good coming out of that Azure Blue Pearl pen.  

I have also seen where you should only put German inks in German pens (some vendor at a pen show used to have these printed up cards that said that) along with only using "safe" inks.  Of course, they didn't say anything about Herbin inks (standard line -- not the 1670 or 1798 shimmer inks) one way or the other -- and Eclat de Saphir is my go-to ink for some of the Parker 61s (I want something non-cloggy in those capillary fillers).  And the handout dig suggest that Japanese inks were "safe" -- but I had a brand new ply-glass sac get stained by IIRC original formula Sailor Jentle Sky High.  

So it's a case of YMMV.

pelikan 4001 brillian brown should be safe for vacumatics - have a 1939 vac inked up with this on and off for the past year - barrel already reasonable ambered and no deterioration noticeable to date.  an alternative - diamine sepia is a noticeably paler and less viscous ink - also safe so far (note - the diamine sepia seems to make my flex nibs railroad more)
