Landolt-Arbenz Lilac (possibly limited edition)

Recommended Posts

Spurred on by the encouragement of "A Smug Dill", I decided to finally open a bottle of ink that was given to me as a parting gift by former colleagues, 12 years ago. It was nothing like what I expected. Although Landolt-Arbenz is a known manufacturer of ink in Switzerland, it is possible that this was a limited edition run. The bottle is different from the other example in the reviews here, and totally different from the inks shown in their web site now. The cap was covered in wax, though this was not a seal and didn't need to be broken to open the bottle.

As noted in the review form, I was expecting a deeper, redder colour based on the bottle neck, and there is indeed a bit of a red sheen when wet. But it dries quickly to a pastel lilac.

It dries quite quickly and flows nicely, which matters to me as a left-hander.

This is my first review, so I might not have done everything correctly. Certainly before I did the water test, I should have checked that there wasn't already ink on the paper towel.

The white point on the scan is a bit grey but the colour itself is about right.

Luci, thank you very much! I think your review is complete and informative, so bravo!

I have never heard of the Landolt-Arbenz brand. The colour of this ink looks delightfully muted and delicate, and it calls to mind some of the colourways of the recent Sailor Professional Gear Slim Mini pen models — which presumably would be targeted primarily at female pen users in the Japanese domestic market, although both my wife and I like and enjoy using our two greatly (and I now want to get a pink or rose taupe one for myself) — and I think would be a good match for the Rose Taupe.

The writing you did with you looks pretty legible to me, without requiring any strain or undue intensity of concentration on my part. I think it'd be good for headings, mind maps, and calligraphy practice (if you're into that).

I endeavour to be frank and truthful in what I write, show or otherwise present, when I relate my first-hand experiences that are not independently verifiable; and link to third-party content where I can, when I make a claim or refute a statement of fact in a thread. If there is something you can verify for yourself, I entreat you to do so, and judge for yourself what is right, correct, and valid. I may be wrong, and my position or say-so is no more authoritative and carries no more weight than anyone else's here.

I have never heard of this brand either so I went to their website to see their current ink offerings: https://shop.landolt-arbenz.ch/en/10_landolt-arbenz . The pictures are not coming up for me but, based on the ink names, I strongly suspect that the inks are now made by Diamine.

Nice review! Though it's probably not a 'to buy' ink for me I quite like the color - I bet it would sing with a very broad nib. It's also legible to me but I have a thing for softer colors ...

Thanks!

Very interesting.  I also had not heard of the brand before.

The ink in question is aptly named -- but it also looks like an inK that isn't overly legible on the page (it might be nice for drawing, though).

Thanks for the review, Luci!

"It's very nice, but frankly, when I signed that list for a P-51, what I had in mind was a fountain pen."

Thanks for the review Luci ! This brand was totally unknown to me... always nice to learn something new. I like this pastel-violet colour too, although it’s probably not saturated enough for normal use in F/M nibs. But based on the swab, it might turn out darker in wet pens / broad nibs.

And congrats on a great first review. Well done! And as far as I’m concerned: the right review is the one you enjoy doing. Every review sheds some new light on an ink, and gives a personal impression. I like to read other peoples’ take on an ink, and by combining different opinions, it’s possible to get a fairly good idea of the nature of an ink.

Just a quick update - the pen I used is a Parker VECTOR not a Parker Jotter. I bought half a dozen of them in the early 1990s and had completely forgotten the model name 25 years on. A quick visit to the Parker forum on here corrected my misremembering.

Nice review, covers all basic needed so alls great here.

Color is too light for my taste though, property of ink looks great though, brand is new for me, will look into it. Thanks for making me aware of them.

Luci, thank you for this review.  Please try not to worry about doing things "correctly."  Very few people on this forum are inclined to find fault with other contributors.

I imagine that this ink would have an especially warm, vintage look on off-white stationery and agree with LizEF that the bottle is charming.
