@eckiethump eric, that mammoth looks like if you just bought it from their shop in the 1920s.  congratulations.

it is the Mammoth 1850 pen, the girth is slightly smaller than the Magna, but capped it is 7mm longer. No sign of different colour as you normally find under the cap, strong imprint, yes it looks like it did when new out of the shop.

I want to go shopping where you go shopping, Eric. I have in mind a tiny stationery store near the Grassmarket. You were their first customer for 43 years, and they begged you to take the Mammoth for "just one of thae crisp white fivers."

Probably not, though, eh?

Lovely.

Fantastic!!!

They were, the small ones, 5123's I believe were originally ring to pens, the mottled red hard rubber one didn't have a hole for a ring top and the top was tight. The other 5123's I think has post production cap clips fitted.

It's not often you get such a nice variety all at once, only two didn't have super flex nibs.

At the risk of repeating myself, who is this dealer, and can we have his/her contact details?

@eckiethump Of all the vintage English pens, Onoto pens have the most consistently flexible nibs. Mabie Todd has some wonderful flexible nibs, but I have seen plenty that are rather firm and semi-flex. Onoto nibs (at least the ones I’ve experienced) are quite soft, bouncy and flex, and has a kind of indescribable finesse to it.

very true @como, i am fond of the onoto 3/st nibs - they flex and with the feed design being a little stingy - doesnt get overly wet and blob on me.  the modern onoto nibs are a little soft but even with an expert grind, they lack a certain je ne sais quoi compared to the vintage ones - maybe its because the years of use have conditioned the nibs to write they do.

Sorry, I only know the dealer from quite a few years at pen shows, they are very well known in the pen world, but quite private, if that makes sense ? I've never known them to trade on any medium, other than at shows.

It can be quite annoying how "wet" some Swan nibs can be, and difficult to resolve.

The latest group of Onoto's to service, some of which will be recognisable to people with Steve Hulls Onoto book.

@eckiethump Like a page out of Steve Hull's book indeed! I am going to get that book off the shelf and do some pen matching fun 😀. Thanks for sharing!!

Ta Mate.

You'll find the owner very good to deal with, I always head for his table at pen shows, his prices are always good  he's always there to sell. He doesn't seem to deal much, apart from at shows and other than with known people, he is also very well known.

I go to pen shows taking a table, mainly to talk, our shows are too short to do any actual repairs at them.
