Ink The Color Of These Yams?

Preferably reasonably priced and easy to obtain. Suggestions, please?

Diamine Deep Dark Purple looks similar to my eye, it is reasonably priced, but may only be available at Cult Pens so I don't know if that counts as easy to obtain.

DeAtramentis Aubergine/Alexander Hamilton, and possible DeAtramentis Elderberry are similar. I'd go to the Gouletpens website Inks page, and apply the purple filter. You’ll get a good look at many of the available inks.

Most of my inks are dark purple, but I don't know what inks are "reasonably priced and easy to obtain" where you are.

 

For example, my favorite ink is Sailor Kobe Suma Purple and might be a good fit, but Japanese inks tend to be more expensive than most for purchasers in the United States.

 

I agree that De Atramentis Aubergine or Alexander Hamilton are others to consider, but whether they are "reasonably priced and easy to obtain" for you I cannot guess.

 

Diamine Grape is probably also close in color, and Diamine inks tend to be "reasonably priced and easy to obtain" from where I am, but many people (including me) have had problems with it, and to me an ink that I never use is a waste of money at any price.

 

Robert Oster makes many dark purples that look beautiful in swatches, and maybe for you Australian inks are "reasonably priced and easy to obtain," but be sure to read reviews of specific inks by users who do not sell them. Some Oster purples turn green on certain papers.

 

Birmingham Pen Company has really wonderful dark purple inks that are very inexpensive by the bottle but need to be ordered directly from Birmingham Pens, and I have no idea how shipping to Thailand would affect the ultimate price.

 

Both Rohrer & Klingner Aubergine and Montblanc Lavender Purple would have been contenders two years ago, but I don't think either of those inks is available now, although the Montblanc ink was only recently replaced and I still see it on the website of one United States vendor.

If I recall correctly, BungBox had or has a Sweet Potato Purple. Sailor makes the BungBox inks, so that's where they are listed in the review index. Lgsoltek's review shows off the color and gold-green sheen. His original image host went down, so you have to scroll down to find the images. But I suspect that Troublemaker Purple Yam may be a better bet for you. See this review.

Interesting - my first thought was that it looked like Diamine Monboddos Hat but darker. But perhaps not as dark as Deep Dark Purple (?). I'm interested in the color that is more at the top, where the yams are better illuminated.

 

Cult Pens' international shipping rates aren't too awful ...

Ooooh - I like all of those. I think Elderberries has more of the reddish hue that I'm seeing in the yams.

 

I'll have to search around - there's a shop in Bangkok that carries De Atramentis at decent prices and does mail-order but unfortunately no dark purples now (and for the foreseeable future, given the covid period).

Ugh - I just spent a lot of time replying to your post and hit 'Preview' ... and it's gone. Anyway, thanks very much for the many suggestions.

 

I will try to re-write the re-sponse later but, for now, may I ask what problems you have had with Diamine inks? (I've just started using their Oxford Blue in a Parker 61 and, so far, so good ...)

Wow, I really like the BungBox. I also like the Troublemaker but I think it is too blue.

 

There's a Sailor distributor in Bangkok - maybe I will hear back from them tomorrow.

Until today, I thought that, of the brands with more 'exotic' colors, it was pretty much Diamine only. But this post has prompted me to do some internet sleuthing - I found a great store in Bangkok that has many interesting brands and they do mail order. Unfortunately, with covid limitations on shipping - and, I'm guessing, its impact on business - they don't seem to have much coverage right now for any one brand. (That said, I just put J Herbin Poussiere De Lune in my cart ...) They carry De Atramentis, Colorverse, Vinta, TWSBI, KWZ, Robert Oster, J. Herbin, Taccia, Lamy, Aurora, Platinum, Visconti, R&K, Blaze Wu (which appears to be completely sold out), and some Noodler's. Pretty cool! https://thepipscafethailand.bentoweb.com/

 

The difficulties are that shipping to Thailand is generally pretty expensive and import duties for orders over around $40 USD can be very steep. I have a few Thai friends living in the States that visit so, pre-covid, I could ask them to bring me stuff that hard to get here. For now, at least, it's very difficult to come to Thailand.

Good suggestion but, unfortunately, Thailand has steep import duties on orders that are more than (I think) around $40 USD. But, Cult Pens seems to have good prices on some of their ink brands so, even with their £10 flat international shipping rate, it could be worthwhile ordering from them.
