Someday, I need to round up my Pelikans to post a pod photo.

Please feel encouraged to do so!

🙂

I don’t know what was the OP’s intention with this thread, but to me it is about completeness. As FPN “veteran” @christof once wrote in another thread, “completeness is always an expensive thing”. To me, not necesarily in terms of money, but rather of attitude, care, skills and a bit of spare time. Nowadays, good FPs are considered “luxury writing instruments”, but it ain’t necessarily so.

These four vintage pens were either bought from people who salvaged them from attics & garbage cans, in defunct state and restored, or re-assembled from parts to near mint condition. To me, it is not a matter of pride and vanity, but of sharing experience and praising qualities old pens.

Pod photos are cool, they have a small footprint, yet they share not only physical appearance of some pens/“birds”, but also different concepts, ideas and tastes of completeness!

🙂

This is a tiny west-central European population that can typically be observed roosting in coffee shops, libraries, and offices in the Upper Rhine Basin and southern Black Forest, in the vicinity of Freiburg in Breisgau.

What a thoughtful collection. I am assuming the one on the far left is the very desirable and quite rare Pelikan Souveran m1005 Stresemann? A rare bird, indeed!

Thank you, Chimera01, and welcome to FPN!

Yes, it is a Stresemann. I did not realize they were so rare.

I like the Stresemann model in general as an interesting variation compared to a plain black pen. I enjoy the chatoyance of the grey stripes in the light. I find the pen understated (some would say boring), yet a little different.

I bought my 1005 Stresemann from my usual dealer when they first hit the market in 2019. Now that I think about it, that model did seem to come and go from the retail market fairly quickly. If I remember correctly, it was not priced at a premium compared to other M1000 models (if so, it was not by very much), and it's introduction was delayed by some unspecified difficulty in the supply chain (this was pre-COVID).

It is a great pen, although the B nib I ordered it with is almost embarrassingly wide and wet. After using that nib, I now know why blotting paper was invented. To give an idea of just how wet the M100x is with a B nib (at least the B I have), I can drain a complete fill (~1.3ml) in maybe 6-7 A4 pages (sometimes a little less than that with a wet ink). It is ridiculous.

I swapped out the M nib that was in my 1005 Demonstrator (which is still pretty wide and wet) and put it into the Stresemann, and I find the pen much more enjoyable (and controllable) with a finer nib. I don't use the Demonstrator all that much (though it does clean up nicely after use), so it now sports the B nib.

@Chimera01's post motivated me to look up @N1003U's post from 2020. I found the description of the behavior of that particular pod of Pelikans to be quite interesting. My own little pod usually just roosts in the back bedroom/office of my house in Las Vegas. One or two of them have migrated to Hawai'i for short stays, but that's about it. I suspect that @N1003U's pod is one of the more adventuresome pods in existence.

I'm still trying to figure out how to list all my pens down here.

I believe @TitoThePencilPimp once compared Pelikan pens to crack (yes I get that they are quite addictive, and one can blow a lot of money satisfying that addiction), and @sargetalon describes his pen chest as something like "a fertile breeding ground."

I just got back to my house in SW Pennsylvania after being away for 7 months, and sure enough, there were two new Pelikans that arrived in my absence. This type of Pelikan does seem to breed very effectively. Like the good Pelikan addict that I am, despite being tired from my travel, I immediately unpacked and inked the new pens and proceeded to play with them for a while.

I thought that if I was going to purchase a Pelikan m100x then the Stresemann would be the model I would go for. My research then indicated that this was a special edition model manufactured in limited quantities. So, yes, quite rare. On another note, I've noticed that someone here has gone to the trouble of actually scanning ('radiograph') a Pelikan Stresemann 1005 to verify the component materials of the pen and published the images (Member 'dbs' in thread 'New M1005 Stresemann Is A Cheaply Made Pen' - a fallacy and disproven beyond any shadow of a doubt). This is a very interesting community!!!

That was me^^. I am trying to fight the urge to not purchase any new Pelikans. I just got hired as a teacher. Which justified me purchasing a m400 blue stripe (already had the m600/m800 model). Now, the m400 red stripe is calling me.

Maybe I will save up instead for a new tortoise. Hopefully one is released this year.

Heck, a new m101n is always welcomed by me!

Which new Pelikans are you enjoying so far? Is it the blue marble and the m101n red ?

I can can confirm that pelikans don't stop breeding. Befor there are too many to handle, I would like to add another family shot.

Some while ago I've shown some black and now there are some green.

Nothing  really special: Pelikan 400, 400nn (usually inked), 140 (broad clip - fine nib), 140 (slim clip, broad nib :) ), Pelikan 100 (reassembled with spare parts and currently inked).

There are still a few green birds in the flock, but I have to get them in front of my camera first ...

Nice photo, and I love that old shoe bottle of Pelikan ink.

Wonderful! I love those classic green stripes!

How difficult is it to find one of those ink bottles these days? One of those would look good on my desk...

Great that you have a new job (I will PM for details)!

So far I have resisted buying the blue marble M101N, but I am enjoying very much the bright red M101N I have had for about a year now (I am even thinking about having the very broad M nib ground into an italic). I am somewhat jealous of your nice collection of M101Ns. I initially thought I would find the M101N to be too small and light for me, but the more I use it, the more I like it. It is a great EDC pen, has a superb balance in the hand, and is excellent for long writing sessions.

Additions to my flock this year are a standard blue marble M205 (M), an M/K600 red tortoise set (F) (see my profile picture), and quite unexpectedly but very happily, a classic green/black M1000 (EF). Those acquisitions are already more than I should have spent in what has been a somewhat tight budget year, but all of the pens are great. An EF nib on the M1000 tames the otherwise huge flow of the M1000 feed, and the F nib on the M600 is a great pleasure to write with as usual.

At some point I will likely add a Souverän red stripe to my collection (as my wife has acquired my old red M600 by Right of Conquest), but with the addition of the red tortoise, I have now probably enough red Pelikans to satisfy me. I think I am moving out of the (active) acquisition phase now. I have enough pens. The blue marble M101N does keep calling to me though... :)

These bottles come and go on german ebay, but the prices vary from "not a steal, but ok" to "I have to be completely nuts to pay something like that".

I think I have paid round about 25 Euros + shippment and I know only a few decades ago people paid a few german marks for a brand new bottle in the store.

Watch out for "Pelikan Wagenfeld" or "Pelikan 71"

Thanks. I will take a look. 25€ is for me not outrageous, but it sounds like the bottles are not terribly rare, and I have a few neighbors who never throw things away, so I’ll ask around (there are several retired teachers, attorneys, academics, etc., who might just have something like that lying around and may be willing to part with it).

BTW, @DerMarsianer, welcome to FPN! I see you have joined recently. I hope you are enjoying some of the discussions.

Me too! However, I'd love to see this one or similar black/something but with gold finish, so, maybe I'll wait in hope for yet another version.

Some beautiful pens. What is the bottom pen in the first picture (with the white cap)? I am not sure I have seen one before.

Thanks! It's Pelikan Epoch P364 Nutwood brown (more or less).

And that´s a strange binde you have there on your Pelikan 100, the one in your avatar and second from above in the first picture.

Plus your Epoch has a Souverän cap, hasn´t it?

The binde is a replacement, made of an ebonite cap of some older Belgian pen.

The Epoch cap is correct. However, the cap and the body belong to the matching ballpoint. I just installed the nib unit from another fountain pen version. A bit of cheating. Actually, all my daily writers underwent some changes at some point.

Ah... that cap in the picture above looked more like a white Mx05 Souverän/Classic Series cap. Funny what lighting and perspective does...
