Saratoga snorkel-filler that I somehow restored to working condition.  (The body was great when I found it, so I can't take credit for that.)

There's another thread about pens that have surprised us and these have been a real treat to use.

They all arrived 'inked' 3 weeks ago and haven't left my desk since!

I can't shed any light on that particular clip badge, but I thought I'd share this photo. I don't often go for ephemera and other ancillary products, but this one caught my eye. I've always been a Sheaffer Targa fan, so when this salesman's sample case came up, for a very low bid I got it. One can easily imagine discussions about setting up items for promotion and rewards. It does include one complete, albeit ballpoint, pen, but it matches my Targa #2005 fluted gold model. Everything, case included, are in pristine condition (even what appears like discoloration inside the lid on this auction photo is not present in real life). Kinda fun...

It is fun item Jon. A real talking point. I doubt I could have resisted it had I seen it for sale. Congratulations on your find and thanks for the 'peek' at it.

Beautifully presented too!

Regarding the corporate insignia on mine, well... it could be anywhere in the world and as old as a century! Who knows?

I recognise 7 or 8 global brands from your display.

So I see @mrcharlie Very nice.

Do you use yours regularly?

I like the brushed steel exterior and ornate band.

Pressing the spring-loaded, 'Reminder', clip operates the retracting ballpoint. Does your refill have the 'wing-tip' end plug or is it a normal 'K' ink replacement?

I have an empty refill and wondered if I buy a 'K' ink replacement and swap end plugs would it work well?

It may not make a difference but the way the clip end passes through the barrel it appears to align with something inside. I thought the 'wing' shaped end plug might be essential.

Cheers, P.I.Tom

I have a reminder clip pen I use every day (Imperial 440; matches with the FP I use daily) ... but I have a dozen or so of them and the others get less use. I did have this one at work and used it (and a stainless Targa bp) every day for about six months before I rotated.

As far as I know, the clip end passes into the barrel mostly so you can't clip it to your clothes with the ballpoint extended. I don't think it interacts with the refill in any way. Mine works fine with a new K. The old "wing" shape was not necessary; I don't think these pens use the wings to rotate the refill with each click (they don't in my testing anyway) and that rotation isn't necessary for function. I don't think you could easily swap the plastic butt of the refills, but you don't need to.

I have a recent production Sheaffer Fine Black in mine. You might need to get lucky searching web stores with remaining stock if you don't already have one. Or buy a Monteverde K style refill. The Monteverdes are much cheaper, many people say they are better, and you can choose capless gel instead of bp if you want. I don't know about their availability in the NZ though.

You can also use a "standard" parker style refill in this pen if you cut the plastic back end piece down to make it the same length as a sheaffer K. I have verified this works with this model of pen; it will not work in all Sheaffer pens, but it does in this model (and the "imperial" era pens in general). FWIW cut down parker style refills won't work in No Nonsense or Targa bps.

Very grateful for your thorough reply @mrcharlie The info you've included puts me on the right track!

A few Sheaffer refills, K, T, Slimline and roller are still available in NZ but some are definitely out of stock now.

I've had a play around with refills while trying to find one for a vintage German ballpoint. (FEND), brushed steel finish just like your Sheaffer. Ended up shortening a new Schmidt refill and plugged the end with either paraffin wax or PVA. (can't recall now?)

I have been using it ever since as a handy and great looking note pen... (for Sudoku sometimes but I mostly use an old Conway Stewart pencil for those)!

I'll go ahead and order a couple of Fine - Blue & Black before we run out here as well!

Cheers, P.I.Tom

Since I de-railed the topic of this thread, I should get it back on.

Here are three Sheaffers I obtained in October. The first is a Targa, gold plated with gold nib and original converter, not from a dealer but clearly never used. Fine point nib works well. The second is a Targa, slim size stainless model with a fine point nib that works well but could bet a little wetter. No converter but I have some slim carts to refill. The third is second generation (1960s) "Sheaffer" (ie not Sheaffer's, so late 1960s) cartridge pen aka student pen aka economy pen. It is a kelly green body color I did not previously have (color in this photo may be off due to lighting source). The tip on the stated M nib is very much on the Fine size, which is what I'd like anyway so I'm happy with that.

A few weeks ago I picked up another Snorkel, a Valiant.  Not sure if the color is Aqua or Pastel Blue.  Think the nib is an F, but of course I can't use it until I get it checked out and possibly rehabbed (which might not be until the fall).

Weirdly, there were two Snorkels which looked to be identical but one was $10 and the other was $40....  (Naturally I got the $10 one...).

That was also the sale where I picked up an unknown model Waterman c/c pen and a Parker 45 Flighter with a B nib.

Great price on the snorkel

re the colour; aqua vs blue. I’ve seen them referred to as the same colour…

did you mean that you’re not sure if it’s aqua or periwinkle?

See here for colours: http://www.richardspens.com/ref/profiles/snorkel.htm

Just give me the Parker 51s and nobody needs to get hurt.

No, I've seen Periwinkle (although have not been able to afford one).  So definitely not that color.

Had not seen the link on Richard's site before, but have seen some other similar ones.  So, it appears that Aqua and Pastel Blue are the same color, just with different names.  Thanks!

I purchased these two over a few month period and recently had them restored by a friend who specializes in vacuum filler pens. W.A.S.P. pens in grey/silver pattern, often referred to as "circuit board". Not a pen I had particularly chased but I happened to win a green fp/pencil set at the PCA auction at last year's SF Pen show, and when these two came along I thought I would make a little family. All I need now is an example in the brown celluloid.

About a week ago, I told a new friend, of all the fountain pens I have used, the most enjoyable was any one of my Sheaffer School Pens. I have owned several. One has survived with me for most of my life. A day after we talked I found a pair of ‘60s era black and chrome Sheaffer cartridge pens, which appear to be the precursor of the School Pens, on eBay and negotiated what I considered a good buy; $20 for the pair. One had the 304 nib and the other the 305.

They were in fine shape and the 304 nib was a very nice writer. I replaced the 305 with a newer extra fine nib and it is comparable to the 304. I am quite happy with these stylish (in my mind) and simple pens. I have not been able to find a converter for them, but I use a needle point bottle to refill cartridges so I can use my preferred inks with them.
