InkShift – Pelikan Edelstein Jade to Onyx

Pelikan Edelstein Jade is one of the few inks that I really hate – I simply cannot stomach its colour. So time to get creative and try to salvage my bottle. The Platinum Classic Black series gave me the idea to darken up the ink by adding some black. So I set out to try different ratios of two Edelstein inks: Jade and Onyx, shifting from one to the other.

Below is a set of progressive mixes I used while looking for an interesting combination. Works great, and this is a technique I will surely use more often in the future.

I liked the 1:1 and 2:1 Jade/Onyx mixes most, and finally added a final one in between with a ratio of 3 parts Jade and 2 parts Onyx. That became my favourite – a dirty dark blue-green - and I have named it “Murky Waters”. I will do a more comprehensive test of it in the coming days, which I will post here on this forum.

Excellent idea! I'll have to try something like this with my bottle of Edelstein Aventurine which I find a bit underwhelming.

Black inks are great in this situation. I have used Pelikan 4001 black to darken and tame some brighter Diamine shimmer inks. The results have been good.

1:1and 1.5:1 are my favorites! I also can’t stand inks like Jade in its original form. Aquamarine, however, is so dreamy.

nice mix, I like the darker shades, much better than the original Jade.

Edelstein inks mix very well, I have attempted different mixes, also 3 colours...

My dislike was for aquamarine...too green!

I've mixed it in various proportions with Sapphire, to get from blue green up to a neutral blue.

I've also used small quantities of Tanzanite to get darker shades.

Beautiful! The 1:1 looks amazingly similar to Iroshizuku Hoteison, which I love. Congrats on turning an ink you dislike into a lovely mix!

Beautiful. I like the 3:1 colour more, but the 2:1 would be good for everyday writing or a "subversive" black

What paper.?????...if my Jade shaded that well, I'd be using it...as is.

What flex nib and width?

 

In I enough murky greens I think I'll try 1-10 with 4001 brilliant black....In I've had that bottle for 12 years so had no need to buy Onyx.

Will be the third ink mix I try after perking up MB Yellow and then the  MB Orange..

Nothing special… just a Lamy Safari with M-nib on Rhodia No 16 paper. A dry pen like the Safari often shades where wetter pens don’t.

I do have Rhodia 90g, and Clare.  Triomphe and one old but better paper. New to me since I got Jade. So thanks,

I'll have to look for dry pens all my many Pelikans and or semi-flex pens , are too wet.

 

I have a 1990 Lamy Persona that PB ground to CI for me....

I'll try that as soon as I empty a pen. Trying to stay at 7-8 pens inked max, so I can us more ink.
