Need Some Help With A Lamy 99

Dear all,

I recently received in a lot buy a pen that appears to be a Lamy 99. What is interesting is the fact that 99 is nowhere on the pen, and instead there's a name engraved "C. Josef Lamy - Germany" . On the other side of the barrel LAMY is engraved in capitals.

Could this be a prototype or a pen that belonged to the founder of Lamy, or perhaps both?

Any ideas are highly appreciated!

Many thanks

Hello!

I have looked over the early Lamy fountain pens in my collection. Some of the early pens have the model number and nib size engraved on the piston turning knob. Also, some models have the nib size engraved on the underside of the nib section. Often those engraved numbers on the knob and section get worn down with use to the point where they are no longer visible..

Your pen does resemble an early Lamy 99 or an early model 27, but it could also be one of the early "Ratio" models. The early 99 and 27 models are quite similar. Your pen may be from the mid to late 1950s. The Lamy 99 and 27, among other early Lamy piston-filled fountain pens, including Artus models, can be easily disassembled for service and cleaning by hand without the need for specialized tools. The internal parts are nearly identical to the contemporary Lamy 2000. You have what would be an excellent addition to any Lamy collection. Thank you for your question.

Regards, Robert

Dear Robert,

Thank you so much for this comprehensive and super informative reply. I collect vintage Japanese pens, but I do have a soft spot for Lamy pens. From all i could find online, the lack of any model identification/nib width, other than the presence of the founder's name on the barrel got me very curious.
