A Poem A Day

Is this the same guy who wrote the "Thomas Covenant" SF/fantasy series?  I remember reading the first one years ago and kinda liking it.  Didn't know he wrote anything besides fiction.

Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth

"Song of Fairies robbing an Orchard" by Leigh Hunt.

A fun little poem.

Ooh, that is, indeed, a fun poem 🙂

But I must admit that, with the analogy between stolen fruit & stolen kisses in mind, I find the last two lines to be a rather worrying assessment of the human condition 😕

(To be fair, this may very well just be because of my current age. Making a middle-aged man feel weltschmerz is as easy as making a High School student feel depressed )

Incident by Natasha Tretheway, text courtesy of poetryfoundation.org as I'm in a wrist brace:

We tell the story every year—

how we peered from the windows, shades drawn—

though nothing really happened,

the charred grass now green again.

We peered from the windows, shades drawn,

at the cross trussed like a Christmas tree,

the charred grass still green. Then

we darkened our rooms, lit the hurricane lamps.

At the cross trussed like a Christmas tree,

a few men gathered, white as angels in their gowns.

We darkened our rooms and lit hurricane lamps,

the wicks trembling in their fonts of oil.

It seemed the angels had gathered, white men in their gowns.

When they were done, they left quietly. No one came.

The wicks trembled all night in their fonts of oil;

by morning the flames had all dimmed.

When they were done, the men left quietly. No one came.

Nothing really happened.

By morning all the flames had dimmed.

We tell the story every year.

Yes. This is one of the songs from “The Power that Preserves”.

im rereading the series nearly 20 years later. It’s tough to get through but I persevere because I remember I ended up really liking Thomas Covenant.
in contrast to LoTR which is always a fun story.

To Get Wisdom

from Three Small Poems

I will spread out my mind

As the wind spreads the skies;

I will make my heart Argus,

Full of love's eyes:

So shall I grow

Abysmally wise.

With my apologies for my rushed scrawl, I am reviving this thread.

I have already posted the following two poems in another thread, but I’m now ‘pea-roasting’ them here.

So sue me! 😉

First one is ’The Voice’ by famous ‘cheery funster’ Thomas Hardy:

Apologies too for my inept ‘photography’.

Next up, something lighter; ‘Waste Land Limericks’ by Wendy Cope:

I hope that seeing my messy handwriting emboldens other members to post photos of poems written out in their own hand.

It’s not as though your writing could be any more slapdash and lackadaisical than mine!

After all, if FPN isn’t a good place to encourage each other to actually use our fountain pens, what is?

Very funny!  But shouldn't you have held onto this one 'til next month? ;)

I'm glad you have revived the thread.  I like it here.

D’oh!

You are, very clearly, totally right. I’m a fool to myself.

So not of the quality of those above, but hey, it's mine. ;)  Also posting in writing forum:

I think this may count as a CRV, @amberleadavis ; feel free to reposition if you think it's appropriate.

@essayfaire very  nice!

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

And now, ‘London’ by William Blake:

large.6B28D305-9654-44B2-AF3E-EB38826B977D.jpeg.9bca674d230655f9dee710533b95a806.jpeg

I scrawled it with a Parker Vector with the ‘Fine’ nib from a calligraphy set.

The ink is Waterman ‘Havana’.

The paper is a sheet from a ‘WH Smith’ A4 pad of wide-lined 70gsm paper.

The Victorinox ‘Swiss Card’ is only there to prop-up the pen so that one can see the ‘chunky’ arrow shape of its clip.

Edit to fix broken link to the image.

Uhhh -- the image isn't showing.  Just an empty space with a white question mark in a blue box in the center.  And when I tried clicking on the question mark, I got a "404 error" message....

Thanks for the heads-up 👍

I had apparently broken the image link (by editing the description of the image after I had linked-to it) 🤦‍♂️

If I had a nickel for every time I’d done that….
