I couldn't resist getting a bottle each of TACCIA Ukiyo-e Sharaku Koiame and Sharaku Natane at half price, although I'd always passed them over before, on account of their questionable water resistance. I was cleaning out all of Bunbougu's heavily discounted stock of Maruman Mnemosyne N193 notebooks (at a price cheaper than I could get them in Tokyo), and needed to top my order up to reach the free shipping threshold anyhow; and there are only so many colours in the Ukiyo-e line that I don't already have.

However, the most impulsive — and most recent at that — would be the bottle of Utamaro Benizakura, which I expect to have even worse water resistance. I'd already placed my order with Bunbougu overnight, and it wasn't until the middle of the following morning that I decided to have one of the two bottles of Sharaku Kurocha (of which I already have an open bottle at home) substituted, and contacted customer service to see whether they could catch my order to make the change before it got packed and dispatched.

All of those arrived earlier today, I believe; I haven't cut open the shipping carton yet to inspect.

Do I need more ink ? absolutely not
but then I saw the ink swatch of Hokusai sabimidori, the sheen looks beautiful. Do you have that ?

Multiple bottles, bought when they were cheap to get from Amazon (and to trigger multi-buy discounts). Colour-wise, though, I prefer Teranishi ‘Guitar’ Gentle Green.

@A Smug Dill how do you resist the call of the box?

I think it just goes to show that there is nothing I need in that box; or even anything I'm so mad keen on getting. Securing the “bargain” was a large part of the smug satisfaction I was buying.

I endeavour to be frank and truthful in what I write, show or otherwise present, when I relate my first-hand experiences that are not independently verifiable; and link to third-party content where I can, when I make a claim or refute a statement of fact in a thread.   I tried to be impulsive, ordered a bottle of Slovenia Sheaffer Purple through Amazon, but my order was cancelled.  😞 I really wanted that sheen monster.

Have two bottles of Namiki Blue on order for my husband from Goulet Pens (since he decided he really liked the color -- at least coming out of one of my Snorkels with I think an EF nib), and tossed in a few sample vials for me while I was at it, during their Black Friday sale; oh and one of the "corgi" stickers because it was so cute).  Just got the tracking info this morning.  But also not overly pleased by them using DHL....  Not after a couple of recent experiences (the pen that got returned to the seller in Europe as "undeliverable" after waiting over 2 months, and the package that I had HOPED was the pen that the delivery guy tried to bring to MY house after my next door neighbors said "No, this ISN'T # 88...."  (turned out it WAS for them -- the guy just wrote down the wrong house number, because there *IS* no #88...).  And then trying to jump through hoops this AM on DHL's website to sign UP for tracking, now that I have the package #....  (DHL is just lucky they didn't get an even LOWER rating in the survey I filled out this AM, and especially since I told them exactly WHY they got the rating they did...).

I was actually surprised when the DHL guy came to my front door with the package for the people next door -- usually they dump stuff onto USPS for final delivery....  Oh, and I forgot to mention in the survey the CD I ordered from Amazon a few years ago, where I SPECIFICALLY requested the package be put inside my storm door, since its ETA was just after Thanksgiving, and the seller then claimed that DHL didn't PROVIDE tracking (!) -- I suspect the truth was that the seller (who turned out to be in the next COUNTY), didn't want me knowing that it likely had been ordered from the slightly cheaper 3rd party vendor in Germany... (which is the ONLY reason I can think of that it took longer to get that than a pen I'd ordered on eBay from a seller in Japan, which came 2 days later -- and which I could TRACK through Japan Post, and then, once it got out of US Customs in NYC, through USPS until it was out for delivery.....

Let's just say the seller in Japan kept his 100% positive feedback rating -- while the 3rd party seller on Amazon might not BE on Amazon any more.... B)

And while I can say very little positive about DHL, at least it's not like the time up in MA when a woman running a fiber store was on the phone on a complete tear -- because Rodeway had lost TWO of the three packages that another customer's floor loom were being shipped in....  The store had gotten ONE of the crates, but Rodeway couldn't FIND the other two.... :o

I don't know if it was impulsive, but I needed to pick up some school supplies for the kids and I couldn't help but pick up some Herbin Eclat de Saphir and Pilot Iroshizuku Asa-gao, since I've been on a "Royal Blue" kick and wanted to try to see what these inks were about. I'm still trying to decide whether I want to continue with these blues, go back to blue blacks, or just succumb to using black ink all the time.

@arcfide I’d love to hear what you think of Eclat de Saphir.  I put it in a pen with a B or M nib, and didn’t see any shading. I don’t know if this ink is supposed to shade.  I was kind of blah about it. Thing is, that’s my birthstone.

Yep, now I have to chase it down all over the internet. I did get a bunch of samples and bottles in the mail lately, but they were an exchange for a few inks I had and some vintage/rare/hard to find paper and not at all impulse purchases. They were wrapped up and put under the tree with the rest of the stuff I bought lately.

Was interested in it as a "easier" Baystate Blue, or as a slightly different royal blue than the washable royal blues that I have. I was also looking for a good pairing with my Santini Cursive Italic, which I want to write as wetly as possible.

Overall, I think it's a really good color, but for me, there was too much shading. I use rather broad nibs that are really wet, and what I saw was a lot of shade shift between when the feed was fully wet and when the feed dried up a little (this was about 1 wet line to 2 "dry" lines).

In drier applications, it's a very subtle, bright shade with lots of what I think of as Herbin's signature femininity, that is, somewhat lighter saturation and more watercolor-esque shades. When you really dump it on, as I can do with the Santini, you get something of a very bold blue that has a bit of an electric quality. In that sense, I think it is a good color substitute for Baystate Blue if you want something in the same shade but are willing to sacrifice that neon brightness for better behavior.

It is a wetter ink, and it flows really well, but for me, the feed on the Santini wasn't consistent enough with the viscosity of the ink to make for what I wanted. But, overall, I'm glad I picked some up and I do like the ink. I think if you want shading, you'd want to use a pen that has a more controlled flow to a dry flow. However, since the ink has such low lubrication, I think that the hidden application is to take an overly smooth nib (one that doesn't feel like you have sufficient control over the pen, say) and add a little more feedback to the nib. I think this could take an overly smooth glass nib and make something interesting out of it.

Another neat aspect of the ink is the very matte texture (very Herbin) when l applied heavily, similar to Perle Noire. This can be a good thing if you're looking to create a bold blue with a wet pen but don't want the excess sheen that can come from other inks. You'll get a straight blue instead of something that might shift too far red for some people. For example, if you use Sailor Blue, you can get something really less than blue in practice on sheening papers with wet pens. An ink like this would fix that.

So, I'd say that there is a pretty huge range of shading potential in this ink, but it will be highly sensitive to the pen and how wet the ink is applied. IMO, it's a very unique ink because it doesn't behave like other inks, and that makes it a good color to have around. But, I've taken it out of my Santini because it's not what I'm looking for there.

I'm sort of blah about the color of Eclat de Saphir -- there are blue inks I like better.  OTOH, it's my go to ink for in my capillary filler Parker 61s because it's soooo well behaved.

@arcfide thank you for that comprehensive review. Maybe that ink would be good in a pen with a stub nib. I have that tiny bottle of Eclat de Saphir.

Purchased a bottle of Parker Penman Mocha that looked full in the photo. I hope it is not oxidized.

I bought a bottle of Chinese thermoerasable Crystal Blue ink. I’m hoping it matches the color of a cartridge that came with one of my penguin school pens that has an eraser on it.

Pelikan Edelstein Tanzanite, to leave super expensive blue black Aonibi in a single pen; currently trying with a Platinum president M and a Lamy Studio F that writes like a B.

Pelikan Edelstein Topaz; very subtly different from Kon Peki and Ama Iro; somehow got along from the start with a Geha 725 B, also in  an EF M205 Olivine.

Kaweco Smokey Grey, the one ink whose shading I appreciate, in a Waterman W5 F I managed to restore.

Yesterday it was five partly to mostly filled 3/4 oz. bottles of vintage Sanford Pen-It ink at an estate sale, in different colors: "Cardinal Red"; "Peacock Blue"; "Brown"; "Washable Royal Blue"; and "Violet"....
