I found out about the new R&K Blue Eyed Mary ink from @Lithium466, and ordered it and DeAtramentis Columbia Blue-Bronze from VanNess. Maybe this thread should be subtitled “I’m a Sad, Pathetic Ink Junkie.”

The Sad pathetic ink junkie crowd is quite large, I imagine, and not a bad place to be. I'll get there someday. My fabric dye collection is rather large and pathetic, and I've been grateful to have a selection of FP-friendly preservatives and detergents on hand...

Fiber reactive (cellulose) dyes have a rather short shelf life before they become unreliable on fabric. But mixed into a dye they are lovely! After I get done testing preservatives for which works best in ink, I'll start comparing my humectants (glycerine, butylene glycol, propanediol, propylene glycol) and then low-foam surfactants in each color. Then I can start giving the successful "experiments" away for testing with dip pens and **inexpensive replaceable** FPs.

I'm grateful to have found FPN - it means so much to be able to benefit from the experience of others!

There’s definitely a (relatively speaking in terms of our hobby) big market for fiber reactive ink. I hope your research and experiments yield useful results!

Thanks to an email, I learned of J Herbin Paris inks, so ordered the Tour Eiffel ink, which is orange. There might have been a pen in the order. Uh hmm, there was.

The R& K Blue Eyed Mary is their limited edition 2024 ink named after a Brunnera plant, several stores are sold out. It’s relatively inexpensive for an LE at $12.95. I found it at Vanness, which gave me a chance to buy the DeAtramentis Columbia Blue-Bronze, which I have only seen sold there. Other stores carry the Columbia Blue gold, copper, and silver. I loved the Blue-Copper and thought the blue bronze would look good in my Indigo Bronze TWSBI Eco.

Ha, I didn't even get the name right....  looked it up, Vanness still has it.

Of the Columbia Blue-Bronze and Blue-Copper, which one do you like the best? I have some samples I'll take another look.

School supply shop in a town nearby with lots of bottles of Pelikan Royal Blue at 60 THB each (currently $1.70 USD equivalent). Please understand that fountain pen ink is quite a rare site within about 150km in any direction from where I live. I *think* they were likely the 30ml bottles, not the 62.5ml, but, thank goodness, the angel sitting on my shoulder whispered, "You already have a bottle of Pelikan Royal Blue that you don't use because you don't like it.", so I was able to control the impulse and walk away without even looking.

But, even then, I think about going back ...

Why don't you ask the shop to order which ever inks you might like...and explain to the owner what and why of inks. Write it out so he/she can think about it. she can't lose if you commit to buying one each of the basic Pelikan 4001 inks out side the Royal Blue...the black is a very good black...(not that I use it) but for decades second best black to Aurora black....now Noodler's is the blackest.

The 4001 blue-black, a blue that changes to a black, is the driest of all inks and very famous....a got to have inks.

Why you want, brown (a reddish brown), and turquoise as good as the benchmark Lamy turquoise and violet ink....They are very good.

I do not recommend the new duller than hell 4001 green, that was once a lively green-green shading ink. It was replaced by a dull non shading green, in too many wanted Pelikan to make Diamine's Sherwood green and bitxhed continually instead of buying Dimaine.

I was able to give that bottle  of new dull 40001 Green away, instead of pouring it down the bathroom sink.

Instead I recommend € 10 R&K's Verdura . A nose better than the super gouging MB Irish Green, and a neck better than the old lovely 4001 Brilliant green ink.

You could check your local Ebay for that old 4001 green ink. It's only been 5 years since they ruined it.

I was....who in the world needs a green ink???.....before getting a half a bottle for dirt cheap, 4001 Brilliant Green ink....then in that year alone, I bought 19 green-greenish inks....have 24 now.

I suspect the reason they have so many bottles at so low a price is that they haven't sold because, well, no one uses fountain pens around here. Pelikan 4001 inks are available online from Thai sources for significantly lower prices than I have seen anyplace else - $3.12 USD current equivalent for 30ml and $4.83 USD for 62.5ml.  (Edelstein is less but not as big a difference. Pelikan ink pricing is an anomaly for Thailand - other brands are comparable to or higher than elsewhere. Pelikan pens are quite high. 🤷🏼‍♂️) Really, the only 4001 color I'm interested in is the blue black and I already have a bottle of it. (Yeah, I admit, I'm a color snob ...)

I don’t know if it’s a new ink or not, as my last bottle and cartridges of Parker Quink Blue-Black were the Solv-x ones- but I just ordered a bottle of it from Amazon to meet the same day delivery threshold. I think the formula was changed, so I’m considering it a new bottle.

R&K wisely chose to use the prettiest common name of the plant after which they named their ink.

Here in England, although it has little blue flowers that are very pretty, said plant…

Didn't know this year's R&K special had been released... can't find a single review online! Is it good?

That’s an unfortunate moniker for such pretty flowers. I have a monstrously large specimen in my backyard. It’s not in bloom at the moment, but it looks like something out of the Cretaceous period.

I think this should help with determining what is happening with your sheening and shimmering inks, because if it doesn’t sheen for you, it’s not the ink.

Yep, it's a mega sheener. If it doesn't sheen and you want sheen, use different paper.

I don't love the colour much on most papers, though. I did find a pretty combination I was very happy with, but it was tricky. It also fades incredibly quickly compared to other inks, if exposed to any sunlight.

Blimey!

That humungous monster definitely isn’t the same plant!

Might it perhaps be an example of Brunnera Macrophylla…?

‘Blue-eyed Mary’ and ‘Mary’s Eyes’ have very similar flowers, as well as (perhaps unsurprisingly) very similar names 🤔

It isn’t the same stuff as its namesake version from 2016.
The 2016 version had gold sheen.
If I remember correctly, the 2024 version has green sheen.

I am interested to find out how you get on with the stuff 🙂

It’s definitely a possibility. I have several varieties of these small blue flowered plants and I have forgotten which is which. The photo on their website could be any of them. large.IMG_1184.webp.b4059bd7ba2887641592879a033a442d.webp
