The third ink is J Herbin Cafe des Iles. And one of them is J Herbin Ter de Feu  I’m guessing.

Thank you so much!! I haven’t tried all the alternatives, looks like there are a few good ones :)

I hadn’t ever seen Montblanc Emerald Green.

My first impression of it (when seeing it on the InkSwatch.com comparison that Penguincollector posted) was that its undertones reminded me of Pelikan Edelstein Jade.

One can compare those two inks side-by-side by selecting them from the (very long) lists on the pulldowns on:

https://andersonpens.com/ink-tool/

Or one could choose between the various inks that are shown on the InkSwatch.com comparison tool for Mb Emerald Green, and those shown by their comparison for PE Jade, and then compare those inks using the Anderson Pens comparison tool.

And of course look at a few reviews on here of whichever ink(s) one think(s) may be the best substitute(s) for Mb Emerald Green.

I wish you good luck in your quest!

See if you can figure out which seven inks I got.

As the ‘Woad’ plant has the Linnaean name Isatis tinctoria, my guess is that the ink you used for the lines that reference it might be Rohrer & Klingner’s 2021 LE ink of that name.

Or maybe, just maybe Diamine Indigo (although that was Sandy1’s reference ‘benchmark’ for ‘boring’ ink).

Correct on both! The first (and last) is Terre de Feu, "land of fire".

Correct on the fifth ink! (See my forthcoming comment in @namrehsnoom's review about where a bottle of this unobtainium might be found.)

Oh, I cannot agree! It's a blue with a little difference, making it interesting to my eye. Sort of a slightly feminine counterpart to Diamine Prussian Blue.

Lazy me didn’t look up the spelling of Terre de Feu. I have a bottle in the room too. I really like that ink.

Thank you, Mercian! I agree that’s it’s similar to Pelikan jade (which I also happen to love). It’s actually not an uncommon color but because I am a little silly when it comes to inks, I ended up getting a bottle of it anyway! Incidentally, I just got a 10ml bottle of the new J herbin Metropolitan Green ink which is very similar In color—highly recommend—as well.

Here's what I got, in the swatch order as well as their order in the poem.

  • Herbin Terre de Feu ("land of fire")  identified by @Misfit
  • Sailor Jentle Souten ("sky blue")
  • Herbin Café des Iles ("island coffee") identified by @Misfit
  • Daniel Smith Walnut, a dip pen ink that looks really wonderful to my eye
  • Rohrer & Klingner 2021 LE Isatis Tinctoria, which @Mercian identified. I was thrilled to find this supposedly unobtainium - unfortunately it appears to be truly unobtainium now.
  • Sailor Jentle Blue 😁
  • Kaweco Sunrise Orange

Thanks @Misfit & @Mercian for playing along with my attempt at a little game!

Yesterday's impulsive purchase was NOS bottles (with boxes) of Montblanc Blue Black and Black, I believe from the 1950s.

Birmingham Pen Company’s Interstellar Bronze, Tesla Coil, and Emerald Fusion. The emerald fusion pleasantly surprised me with the lovely sheen.

4 Octopus inks two shading; Caramel and Bronze  and two sheen; Medusa and scratch Sea Dragon....Amazon didn't have it...took Unicorn.

I spent a good 30 minutes getting the inks ordered with clunky as all hell, Octopus site....and then made the mistake of saying use my Amazon account instead of Paypal...it got hung up and a telephone call to Dresden, only told me to use Amazon...which don't have all the inks.

Money came whistling around the corner with his hands in his pockets; so I mugged him with my gold plated shovel....one has to have something to throw money over one's shoulder with.

I really hate it when one scrapes the gold plating off the bottom of the shovel.

https://www.papierundstift.de are a better place to buy Octopus inks than Octopus- cheaper inks and free delivery over €59.99 in Germany. They sell quite a few inks at lower prices than other German stores.

1 or 5 cents more expensive....so not cheaper than Octopus, or Amazon, but with a 5th ink I'd had free postage.

I'll have to start a file for all these  places in Germany to order stuff....

I lost the battle of trying to buy off line.

Just cents different now? Was 20% less than Octopus when I looked, with the Classic inks. I've not seen Octopus in stores, but I've heard that chains here in Germany now stock their inks. 👀

Have you tried any of their Barock branded inks?

Barock branded inks?

I didn't know Barock was an East German brand name.

I found a bottle in a castle shop, and thought it a dip pen ink...so it didn't  seem to do much....and it either turned bad after 5-7 years or I just decided to make place. I did not put that in a fountain pen.

I chase shading inks....and Barock didn't as far as I can remember or it didn't shade in a real flexible dip pen.

..................

4 inks for €22 seems a good deal...

I just bought 3 Chinese inks, one is 久久 Blue, another blue black that is too blurry in the picture to read, and a red shimmer ink from the tropical fish series. Trying to find the perfect red is harder than expected.

Top 5 of 19 currently inked pens:

MontBlanc 144 IB, Herbin Orange Indien/ Wearingeul Frost

Sailor x Daimaru Central Rockhopper Penguin PGS mini, Sailor Wonder Blue

Parker 88 Place Vendôme IB, Diamine Golden Sands

Salz Peter Pan 18k gold filled filligree fine flex, Waterman Serenity Blue

Pilot Silvern Dragon IB, Iroshizuku Kiri-Same

always looking for penguin fountain pens and stationery

Apparently it was the biggest manufacturer of ink in the old East Germany and became state run. After the fall of the Berlin Wall the company was effectively dissolved, and one retired gentleman and one younger former employee kept the business going until a decade or so ago. Octopus bought the brand name as it had 200 years of history behind it, and because they operate from (or near by) the former site.

I say apparently because I haven't verified it all- it was present on a couple of the ink reviews.

At least two of the Barock inks look to be shading inks- ones from the 1910 (art deco era) range.

Well, 5 minutes of research later... that all pretty well tallies with the "official" history on the company website.

https://www.octopus-office.de/shop/en/barock/#:~:text=The history of Dresden Barock, could be called document proof.

One peculiar bit of decision making- why relaunch a historic brand name with one nice historic set and one fluorescent neon set?? Target a specific market or at least keep some consistency, surely. Putting out only "classic" inks under the newly acquired brand name would have been a good opportunity. Different bottles to the Octopus/Diplomat inks would have also helped the new relaunched brand to stand out. The modern/garish stuff could go under the Octopus Fluids brand, or a newly invented one. Especially with the 200th anniversary only two years away...

Garish...neon named inks....and even in the bottle they looked garish.

Agreed. They're not my kind of thing. Why bring back a centuries old brand name and attach it to neon ink right out of the gate? 😅

€5 something for an empty non-labled ink bottle of Octopus.

A bit high IMO.
