I know there is an existing and long standing thread on impulsive pen purchases but frankly if it's an impulsive purchase.. for me it's likely an ink vs a pen. As I just completed my order for Sailor Manyo Haha it made me wonder... what other inks are being purchased on a whim?

Sometime last year my local Maido store greatly expanded its ink selection, and I wanted to make a purchase to reward the store for offering such an extensive selection of inks to the community. I had hoped to find Sailor Kobe Suma Purple, but although the store carried Kobe inks, they did not have that one, so I made a quick decision to buy a bottle of Sailor Kiwaguro for a friend who seems always to be looking for black inks to test.

I bought a bottle of Diamine Golden Sands that I have no specific use for.

I just fell in love with how cool it is. I’ll have fun thinking up decorative flourishes

and calligraphy with it.

A couple of months ago, when I was ordering the new Lamy Safari Violet pen, I ended up getting some samples: Robert Oster Carbon Fire and Grey Seas (both of which I like enough to want to get full bottles of), Noodler's Purple Mountain Majesties (which is okay but looks a lot like other slightly red leaning purples I already have), and Ferris wheel Press Tanzanite Sky (which I haven't tried yet.

Then yesterday, I went to a flea market/antiques fair that's held something like semi-monthly in a warehouse in Punxutawney, PA, and picked up an nearly full bottle of vintage Skrip Permanent Royal Blue for $3 US (decided to pass on the half full bottle at the same price, even though these are the good bottles with the built-in inkwell). Another booth had what sadly turned out to be six boxes of (empty) bottles of vintage Quink Washable Brown (1940s style bottles) and one that was just the box...). :( The bottle I did buy, the ink looked good, without any sort of SITB, but I haven't had a chance to try it yet (the seller but it inside TWO plastic bags in case of leaks).

Diamine Blue Velvet

noticed an interesting price from a seller who had other Diamine inks but only one bottle of this

I jumped on it, since I still had not tried it...

• Montblanc Corn Poppy Red — never before had I considered buying it, or any other Montblanc ink for my own use for that matter, after the bottle of Montblanc Ruby Red I bought, for less than US$1 on stock clearance, twenty years ago from a high-end national department store here so badly disappointed me.

Other first-time purchases of ink colours on the same order:

• Pelikan Edelstein Olivine

• Standard Bindery Stargaze — been watching this, and in fact had it in my shopping cart, for several months but never pulled the trigger on it until now, after Standard Bindery seems to have closed up shop altogether in the face of COVID-related upheavals. (The other Standard Bindery inks I had in my cart had sold out in the meantime.)

• R&K Salix and Scabiosa — I’ve been waiting for an opportune time to buy these for a while, namely to pad an order so as to be eligible for free shipping

Also on order from the same retailer, not as replacement as I never actually intended to buy more bottle of it, but since it’s so significantly discounted:

12 bottles of Pelikan Edelstein Smoky Quartz — I’d call buying that amount whimsical and impulsive

2 coke bottles of Pilot Blue-Black. Shall be concentrated by evaporating. Fabulous ink.

Seeking a Parker Duofold Centennial cap top medallion/cover/decal.
My Mosaic Black Centennial MK2 lost it (used to have silver color decal).

Preferably MK2. MK3 or MK1 is also OK as long as it fits.
Preferably EU.

I've been on an IG and other permanent ink kick recently so:

Rohrer and Knlingner Salix and Scabiosa, KWZ Ig Green 1 and Mandarin, MB permanent blue, and De Atramentis Document Orange and Brown all in one recent order...

And I've got another, slowly, coming with Noodler's 54th Massachusetts and Black Swan in Australian Roses.

I'm eyeing off a bottle or Noodler's Polar Brown too, for my piston pens.

Ha, why didn't you take and keep the bottle in the pass-around box last year?

An ink as reliable and beautiful as Smoky Quartz at a significant discount? I would call a dozen bottles perfectly reasonable.

Will work for pens...

Maybe I should order another dozen more (at approximately A$8.60 per bottle, including shipping and GST-not-collected), then, just in case I get reincarnated and need more than a lifetime's supply! Platinum Classic Ink Khaki Black was going to be my primary brown ink for life, but it's just not economical to get either locally or shipped to Australia from Japan, especially now (with COVID-19 related upheavals, Rakuten Global Market closing down, Rakuten Global Express being a total pain in the butt to deal with, and all that).

By the way, I was in a bricks-and-mortar writing instruments specialist store in Sydney CBD today, and saw they had the 'cheap' Sailor clipless Fude de Mannen pens in stock. Guess how much they're selling those for apiece? A$69.95.

The green one? Goodness. And I thought I was overpaying for the one I have on pre-order* (and overdue) at full local retail of $27.95 plus shipping. I know I have one already, but loving it so much that deciding between grey, brown or black ink is too difficult. And there's that blue* one on the way, still - another month says Amazon - postage is so slow... Maybe that's why a B&M store can ask so much. They actually have stock.

* This is impulsive pen purchasing rather than ink, but they do both come with a cartridge...

A lot of 14 ink samples someone was selling on eBay. A bunch of Akkermann and Iroshizuku. It's been a month and I haven't even tried any yet. To distracted with other pen related projects.

Two bottles of Superchrome Blue, each 3/4 full. I know the history of the ink and its associated issues. Appropriate pen standing by when the stuff gets here.

And i've never used the ink before...

I'd say that's a little impulsive...

I wouldn’t really call it impulsive as I did a lot of research beforehand, but I bought a full bottle of Sailor Kiwa-guro and I have no use for a black ink. I just felt like I should have one on hand.

I bought the most incredible special packaging in all of inkdom, backed by a celebratory once in a lifetime anniversary edition.

I just could not help myself because it's all about cardboard, provenance and of course the plain square glass bottle.

Oh, it also happened to come with some blue Sailor ink.

FOMO alls the ways down :gaah:

I don't really use black either, but decided i should have one. I bought Noodler's Dark Matter because of the story behind it

Not really impulsive but surely foolish, I just purchased a bottle of Scribo ink because those nice folks @ Pen Chalet carried it & had provided a discount for July 4.

I don't like the step down on the pens & haven't been tempted by any of the finishes offered to make me want one but the ink just was a temptation that I was tired of resisting.

This is also my first pen related purchase since early March when that nice fellow Atsu sent me a bottle of Pen's Alley ink.
