You know I almost bought that thinking someone here would like to have it. But I then thought no, who am I to presume that someone here who wanted it, wouldn't get it. Sorry you missed it. Me, I am going to have loose the Ebay, before I go broke.

There was actualy two at the same time and one of them nobody bid on. I sent this person a message asking if he/she would be putting it back on for another try but haven't heard back. Now it will have to turn into a quest.

I saw one of those pop up a few months ago and was wondering about it. Glad to see that they come up every now and again. :) Does anyone know more about them?

I've also seen several times some kind of Esterbrook paper clip thing... It's usually described as a "ball bearing clip." Does anyone know anything about these? I've actually found one for sale right now: link

I used to work in a pharmacy that had a clip just like this that said "Hunt." Do you think it was the same company that makes Hunt dip pen points? I wrote down all the numbers and such that were on it, but I don't have that paper with me at the moment. I'll have to dig it out some time.

GOOD NEWS. I sent the seller an e-mail this morning as stated above and long story short, I just sent a PayPAl payment for it. Now I got to wonder what other little odds and ends did Esterbrook make.

Stephen - I've also seen the clips and in Paul Hobans book it shows nine different sizes of the clips and oh yea, they also were made in 4 different colors  :hmm1:

Good job on the deal! I need to try that some time--I'm sure some sellers just want to get rid of the items and not have to deal with having it relisted. I've had several forgotten things in my watched list go without bids before.

I'd love to hear more about the compass when you get it. :)

I can't say I know too much about them, but I believe there were two different sizes of compasses. They also made them in a paper wrapper instead of tin. Here are pictures and instructions of the one I have. Interestingly, the bottom photo shows the compass with the Esterbrook name on it in the instructions, but I do not believe it is so on the actual compass itself.

As for the clips, the #40 size is really nice and I have one around here holding some important esterbrook papers. :) :) I remember I was at a flea market a couple of years ago and this vendor had a bucket full of metal clips. Thinking they were for sale, I looked through them and found an Esterbrook #40. I asked how much, and the vendor said they weren't for sale, they were to keep up his tent. :D What a wierdo I must have looked like. :roflmho:

Thanks. I'll take some good close ups when I get it. I got an e-mail yesterday from the seller stating he would mail it out Thursday so maybe a week from tomorrow!!

  • 3 weeks later...

Well, it came in last week while I was on vacation. As this is a #8 and Brian shows a #6-B in his pictures I guess I will try to find the others. I'm sure they come in different colors and with various jewels :glare:

As you will see, the "Esterbrook" logo is actually on the compass and not the slide like the drawn pictures.

Aaahh, so I'm missing part of the instructions. Thanks for the pictures! I wonder if mine has the esterbrook name on underneath that slider as well, time to dig it out I guess. :)

Thanks for sharing!

Ahh! Great pictures! I like that little sandpaper square part. I have used leads in a similar fashion before and I never thought about using sandpaper to sharpen them--I always just used a sharp blade to cut them at that angle. I may try using some sandpaper next time. :)

My first semester of college I had to take a drafting class. We had to learn line weights, what the various lead colors were for and why, so on and so on. I do remeber using sandpaper then to sharpen the pencils......... circa 1982

Well that was a dangerous trip to E-Bay. I saw many other things that got my finger all twitchy over the "bid now" button.

This Compass is like the one I just bought for anybody wanting one.

Thanks for the heads up Donnie
