Love For Mb We Charles Dickens?

Hi there,

I have just gotten to the MB world of pens after being in the Japanese realm for some time. I noticed this pen has been around for almost 20 years and I am not sure if there are that many in the used forum,

I am attracted to this pen cause of the writer and the simplicity of the pens design.I noticed that theres not much review on this pen and maybe I am mistaken on that observation.

My question is the cap. It is so so huge. That distracts me a lot. Can I ask those around who first bought the pen If you still have it? Has it grown to something you enjoyed of the pen seeing it is quite unique and stands out in a strange little way.

I love this pen and regret not purchasing it when it was readily available. The only reason I hesitated was that I felt the cap was too heavy for posting.

No. From where I am, I can only view from my computer before taking in the plunge. I love the body of the pen and the cap seems a little off-balance from pictures I have seen.

Have you handled the pen?

I have this pen --- bought from ebay brand new and sealed for $750. You can still find this pen new and sealed on ebay from time to time.

The F nib is little flex but very scratch. The tip is slightly different to one on the current nib. The silver on cap is just a thin layer. It was glued on the inner barrel. At time when I bought it, the glue already does not function and the sliver can move around. I have to re-glue it. Since it is just a thin layer so not that heavy. The pen certainly can be posted, just little heavy -- not Le Petit metal cap heavy.

Piston mechanism is different to other Montblanc's, it is much longer so the big long pen can only hold the same amount of ink as 146 does. Nib decoration is no where close to the modern Montblanc. It is more like stamped instead of CNC engrave.

Except glue on inner cap, other material looks in very good condition even after 20 years.

You will be disappointed when you actually handle the 1990's pen. I bought several 1990's Montblanc and quickly realized they are not as fancy as the current ones. So I stop buying them.

Totally agree with you. A friend of mine possesses two Marcel Proust (from 1999 if I’m not mistaken). Both of them developed a few visible hairline cracks on the grip section after several month usage. The disastrous consequence was a €200 squander.

Do you then have any regrets purchasing this pen?

Fancy is a relative term. Older special editions and limited edition pens were more closely tied to historic models and less ornate in general. Some prefer the aesthetic. i personally like the older models better on average than the latest releases. Very few of the new pens move me to want to open my wallet. I bought the Homer WE, but more because it was a large pen with a #9 nib and an O3B available.

The Dickens is an interesting pen. There is a lot of weight int he cap and not much in the body. Also the pen can appear different colors in different light. Just google photos to see what I mean. I found it comfortable to use, but i did not want to pay for a nib swap so i traded the pen (I actually had the three piece set) for other pens I liked more. If you like te looks and have a good deal, get the pen.

If you want less blah, blah, blah and more pictures, follow me on Instagram!

How does one gauge the need for ink refill in the absence of an ink window? That is another of my thoughts as I look into the pen. I agree the pen isn’t as fancy as some but there’s a simple elegance to it that I find so un-montblanc but yet you know it’s a MB pen.

You refill it when it runs out of ink.

Oh so true. How on earth did we manage with Parker Vacumatics, Conway Stewart (and many others) with lever fill systems?. My Mother used an Onoto plunger fill pen when on fire watch during the war and never ran out of ink You soon learn just how long a fill will last..

No, I only regret my pen purchase when I find the pen company has moral issue. For example Pxxxx, it tries very hard not to commit their warranty. But Montblanc is a gentleman in pen industry.

Strange you should say that as there are other posts going on at the moment on the MB site that would seem to indicate the exact opposite. I think it is mostly down to the setup in your home country.

I actually really like mine, I like the look of the silver cap! I never post my caps anymore so the weight does not bother me, besides, it is still lighter than my Visconti Blue Moon.

That is great to hear.

Apparently MB still has some pens on stock. My dealer ordered one of those NOS for me and it will be delivered straight out of the MB warehouse in Hamburg. I asked for it to be checked prior shipping though, as I assume some 20 years lying down might do something with the silicone grease on the piston. And I just learned that they ran out of F nibs, so they will regrind a M nib to the desired F nib. With a bit of luck it will be delivered end next week, or the week thereafter.

Can't wait for your impressions when you get it.

As I said, the piston, silicone gasket won't have any problem. The only problem is the glue inside silver jacket. See how shinny of the pen?
