I'm not even nearly as good as fpupulin, but I am also capable of enjoying this nib.

Rather nice, can't complain! Well done, I would say.

Really, my friend, if you have some good vintage flex nibs, you do not need a 149 Calligraphy. They do the same things.

But, said between us, I am really happy to have fallen into a dealer shop a year ago and have bought the only 149 Calligraphy that has ever arrived in Costa Rica ... It was a real stroke of luck!

Have fun with your vintage flexies!

@fpupulinThat’s true. It’s amazing that you are the only one of the whole of Costa Rica who got this Calligraphy pen from the boutique and you happen to be the perfect person for it! So you and this pen found each other 🙂 You had mentioned that it was difficult to get inks and pens into Costa Rica, now even more so due to the pandemic. So all the more you will cherish and enjoy what you have!

Anything is great in this shot! Your educate calligraphy, the dark amethyst ink, the extraordinary pen, and that beautiful case, a well deserved home for such a unique writing instrument!

I hope you will treasure her for years to come.

I learnt to be patient, my friend...

Before of the pandemic, I was used to buy one or another pen and have them sent to the address of my fathers in Italy, who I visited once a year. Now, the Covid has confined me in Costa Rica since January, 2020, and I have no idea when I will be able to travel again to see my Italian family.

I have a few pens waiting for me there, but I almost forgot which ones...

I did follow this particular thread at its inception; but have missed much of it now.  Back then, when I left off it, there was <talk> of MontBlanc not continuing to produce this pen; but now I read that the nibs will still be manufactured.  The strange thing, to me, is that there are two 149 Calligraphy pens on offer on eBay right now and <both> are being offered for more than double the suggested man. retail price!  Do the sellers know something that we do not or are they simply trying to be greedy?  Perplexing...

This pen is very hard to come by. I ordered mine in July 2020 and waited 2 months for it. The 2 buyers that placed the order of fall 2020 still has not received their orders.

I imagine that is the dual effect of the uncertainty about the real intentions of Montblanc about the production of the Calligraphy nib, and the fear that the rumors about Montblanc resuming soon the production and distribution of the nib are just rumors.

I just read that there are Montblanc boutiques in Italy that still have the 149 Calligraphy available, but it is not strange that the simple rule of demand and offer will push the price up.

I, for one, find that the regular price of this pen is already very  steep, so I can not see somebody wanting to pay double this price, but one never knows...

Yes, I think I should be happy with all those flexy Watermans and Pelikans that find themselves in my pen-case (along with Osmias and the big Matador, all of which have fabulous nibs)

I sent mine back to Montblanc after reading that it's supposed to write like an EF without pressure (mine wrote like an architect M) here.

I have to come back to this and give update. After spending many hours with the pen, I can safely say the nib performs amazingly and that MB really pulled through and did a marvelous job on it.

I almost never commend big companies, but I really got a pen that surpased my expectations and more, and commend MB on the excellent job.

I would also like to give thanks to Fritz Schimpf for all the help and highly recommend their business.

Thank you for the advice re Fritz Schimpf. Did Fritz Schimpf offer advice on use via email, besides of course facilitating the purchase and any interaction with MB?

I bought the pen from them, and they took care of me, this included dozens of e-mails back and forth regarding the expected pen's performance, testing of the nib, etc. Honestly, I adjusted the nib I first got myself, which I shouldn't have, but my warranty was honored anyway and I really didn't deserve that.

I figured I will be able to fix the hard starting issue myself, not really realizing the nib is too wide in the first place, which is almost impossible to fix yourself without proper tools. Only after realizing how it should write here, in this thread, did I decide to send the pen back anyway and while I was afraid my warranty will no longer be honoured (deservedly), Fritz Schimpf and Montblanc took care of me anyway.

I don't really like reviews of shops where a person buys something and then receives the item - that's a given. But this was really a more complicated problem that Fritz Schimpf shined through and I think deserves a praise.

Well; I did not attach that bit, chiefly because it is only a good illustration of the well known saying that a 1000 miles (plus- in this case) journey beginning with one rather small step. But here it is, or the first bit of such doodles, along with the MB leaflet that guided me and the pen I used (but neither the pen nor the leaflet can be held responsible for the outcome)!

Newstudent...

You did great for your first time. Much better than I can do. I'm probably going to purchase one however not for calligraphy...but to have an EF "soft" nib and just use it with my normal handwriting.

Regards,

David

Many thanks for the encouragement. Hope to make another effort after using the flex nib as an EF/F writer for a while.

I am really glad that your pen came back in perfect order. Kudos to Schimpf and Montblanc for making this possible.

But what I particularly enjoyed was your satisfaction in owning and using a pen that suppressed your expectations. After one year using mine, I can repeat you exact words: "it surpassed my expectations and more"...

Enjoy your pen in good health!

Before leaving for a few days of vacation, I flushed my Calligraphy from the Diamine Golden Brown and stored the pen. Now, after we came back a couple of weeks ago, I still have to ink my Calligraphy, so to leave to other pens the chance to return in use...

In these days I had fun with a few of my old friend nibs, but now is really time for the Calligraphy to come back at work!

After further spending much more time with this pen, I have to say this is the best nib I have ever written with. It's simply amazing. It requires work put in to be able to understand it, but once you do, it's so satisfying.

I'm certain I have a lot to learn still, and I am looking forward to it.
