I have a Pelikan M800, c. 1990, with "W. Germany" on the cap ring. It has a juicy, soft, springy M nib, with "E/N" in an oval on the side of the nib. It is a superb writer and a joy to use. I bought the pen new in 1994 and it has been in regular use ever since. I will never part with it voluntarily.

 

I wish Pelikan would bring back those nibs for the M800s. I think you would like it.

I have four older M800s, one has it's original with 14kt fine nib, and one has a 14k medium nib. Both do seem softer than my more modern nibs and are delightful to write with. Maybe Pelikan could reissue a 14kt soft version as a special issue? Montblanc seems to be doing pretty well with their Calligraphy Flex, maybe Pelikan could make a similar special edition?

Both do seem softer than my more modern nibs and are delightful to write with. Maybe Pelikan could reissue a 14kt soft version as a special issue? I wish Pelikan would. My older 800 with the E/N nib is 18k and delightful, so different than the modern 800 nibs.

I do wonder what changed from the older nibs to the new ones, they were doing them in house all the time (except a brief period in which the asked Bock, it seems).

Sometimes I wonder, maybe they had those old vintage all mechanical machines, and then suddenly they threw everything out and replaced them with new computerized things?...

Interesting. In this case what does"flex mod" entail? I looked at his site and it mentions 14k flex modification.

So I actually emailed him about the mod on an 18K nib, since John Mottishaw's site (I believe) mentioned that the Pelikan M800+ nibs were large enough to receive the flex mod on 18K rather than 14K. Mike confirmed that for his work as well. I believe he might have thinned the nib and possibly did something else; I think he told me at the time, but I have well forgotten.

 

It's not a noodle or anything, but it does have pretty decent range. I wish I had also asked for a needlepoint grind at the same time (maybe next year). It's comparable to my vintage Pelikan nib, but there's also something that feels different about it that I can't put my finger on. Overall, I'm pretty satisfied.

Ironically, I wish my M600 nib were more rigid. But then, I like freaky fine nibs, and rigidity helps with smoothness. And yes, I am aware of the insanity of going to Pelikan for anything "fine." Mottishaw does a good needlepoint,too, FYI.
