@donnweinberg I have another question. In the Gourmet Pens blog review, Azizah mentions the cap and how it threads on, sometimes starting out not right. Mine seems to have that issue.  Do any of yours?  I think it’s my first True Writer to have this issue. Is there anything I can do to help it?

  • 2 weeks later...

I decided to order a True Writer mechanical pencil in the Starry Night colorway. It was $26 before tax, so why not?  I have an original Sea Glass mechanical pencil already.

A lot of my new mechanical pencils take 0.5mm lead. The True Writers take 0.7mm. Oh well, that’s ok.

I’m considering getting one rollerball True Writer.  I read an old post about them on the Inkophile blog. It mentioned the fiber tip refills, which Levenger still has on their website.

@AmandaW oh cool, my Pencil Twin!  I had it on the eBay watch list, and decided to order it before bed.

I’ve been looking at the Inkophile blog for True Writer posts. I might will get one Rollerball pen, then get the fiber tip refills from Levenger. But which rollerball color. Water Lilies is one, and the demonstrators are often on eBay in rollerball and ballpoint. I saw a Blue Bahama demonstrator.

@AmandaW Do you have a nice, dark pencil lead to recommend? Most of my mechanical pencils are 0.5mm. I will need to order one or two 0.7mm refills for the True Writers.

My favourite brand for fine leads is Pilot Neox. (And Hi Uni for 2mm.) I usually get 2B, but they are all good.

@AmandaW  Thank you very much. I did look to see where you posted about your Starry Night mechanical pencil. It was with your Pinkly. We are double twins.

After looking at Jet Pens guide to mechanical pencil lead, @AmandaW’s suggestion, and reviews of a couple brands of lead, I did place an order including Pilot Neox lead in 0.7mm.

I went back a few pages to use the link to the True Writer History. It went to Levenger’s website showing True Writers for sale. Could this mean they are finally working on the True Writers history putting images back?  We shall see.

It's been several weeks since I last checked the Levenger site, but at that time, Levenger still had not restored the history, which it said it would do on its various blogs.

Thanks for the information @donnweinberg I really hope they get it restored. We really need it.

The Starry Night mechanical pencil arrived today. It needs light to show off.  I’m glad I got it.

Compared to the Sea Glass mechanical pencil, the Starry Night is a bit longer. I’ll post a photo later.

Here's a funny and embarrassing (for me) story about a new True Writer.  About a month ago, I ordered and then received from Levenger its "Tortoise D'Oro" FP, which is the tortoise body with a gold-plated cap.  When I took the pen out of its box for inspection, I thought I saw a defect on the cap finial -- some missing gold plating.  I returned the pen for free to Levenger with a handwritten note about the missing gold plating, and my account was refunded.  More recently, in placing a new order, I tried again to order the Tortoise D'Oro FP, figuring that this time, I'd receive one that wasn't defective.  It arrived, and it appeared to have the same exact defect.  I called Customer Service and described my consternation to the Levenger representative.  She was very patient, looked it up, and then explained to me that if I look closely at the cap finial, I will see not a defect of missing plating, but rather, Levenger's "tree logo."  I looked again while on the phone, and sure enough, the tree logo is there.  As the Saturday Night Live character, Emily Littela, played by Gilda Radner, would have said, "Never mind!"  Here are the relevant photos:

In my effort to rationalize to myself that I'm not, in fact, a total idiot, I checked other models and discovered that the tree logo appears only very recently only on metal-capped models.  I have many of the metal-capped models, which do not have any logo on the finial.  If I hadn't been told that the design was a tree, I wouldn't have "seen" a tree there.  Now that I'm told it's a tree, I see the tree and adjacent land there.  Any psychologists out there?  A good example of the problem of perception, eh?

Can see what you mean, don....my first take was that plating was missing too....

But like you say, once you hear that it's a tree logo, it's clearly there......

Seems like a bit of an odd logo......but what do I know?

Nice pen though!

It is somewhat an odd logo, at least the way it is done.  The logo is hard to make out with the naked eye if you don't already expect it.  If you and I both had the initial impression of missing plating, and if great minds think alike, and if we are both great minds (a big "if"), then . . . .

I’m not sure if I would have recognized the tree if I didn’t already know it is one. Hard to know. I think they did a better job adding the tree to the top of a Retro 51 collaboration.

Thanks, Misfit.  I'm beginning to feel better about my perceptual abilities.  🤓

I accidentally won the auction for this blue Metalist. I put in a real low-ball bid and apparently nobody else was interested (Misfit). I think tax and shipping is more than my winning bid.
