What Does Engraved Number On Snorkel Mean?

HDoug

Recommended Posts

Just thought I would chime in. In my collection I have a pastel green Sentinel with a medium 14k nib, and it has an 1127 above the imprint. I checked the rest of my many snorks and no others have the engraved numerals like this one. Would love to know exactly what they mean...

Hmmm . . . there's another 1127 on the list already. Posted September 28. Said to be a burgundy Valiant.

By the way, my 1127 is a Valiant. Why would some Burgundy Valiants have a number and some not? What is the meaning of life and why is the sky blue?

"...and why is the sky blue?"

Much easier to answer than the mysterious, engraved Sheaffer numbers...scattered short-wavelength light!

A numbered Snorkel has just turned up on eBay. We already had the number on the list but not the model and colour. We can now confirm that #0755 is a Grey Snorkel Admiral. It is being sold with a matching pencil. The eBay sale is at: https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Vintage-Sheaffers-Snorkel-Fountain-Pen-Pencil-Set-With-Original-Case-14k-gold-/164900934110?_trksid=p2349624.m46890.l49286

Just received another numbered Snorkel:

Blue Statesman - #1316 (from a p&p set). The sac protector is of the 2nd generation with four narrow rails. (http://www.richardspens.com/ref/profiles/snorkel.htm). So maybe 1956 - 1957?? --just a guess because of the four narrow rails.

Thanks for sharing this new number. I’ll add it to the list. Could you perhaps  post a photo of the inscription?

I just purchased a Burgundy Snorkel Soverign in a set with a mechanical pencil of the same design. It came with a nice clamshell case and original instructions too. No identifying numbers anywhere.

The numbered Snorkels are rare. So far, we have only found 26 examples amongst all the Snorkels still in circulation.  No one in this thread has been able to work out what the numbers mean.

Another numbered Snorkel has turned up on eBay: a pastel green Snorkel Saratoga with number 2183. This is the first 2xxx number we have seen.  The eBay sale is at: https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/GORGEOUS-SHEAFFER-SARATOGA-SNORKEL-PASTEL-GREEN-14K-FINE-NIB-USA-/114955393640?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&_trksid=p2349624.m46890.l49286&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0

Here's another one from the 2xxx's, and like the recent 2183, this is also green. Its number is 2259. It's from the mid 50s judging from the four narrow rails on the sac protector. The pen has its original two-tone 14k fine point nib and is a Sentinel model.

Well, I just checked all of mine, and do have one that does have a number: 0565.  Ironically, it's also a green one (not sure which green, but I suspect not one of the "rare" greens).  None of the others seem to have numbered, but the black Snorkels in particular also seem to have the imprint worn off almost completely.

A little disappointed that the blue one doesn't have a number (that's the one with the semi-flex Palladium Silver Triumph nib) because that one has paint or chalk in the imprint which makes it more legible.

I think now that the four-digit numbers above the imprints on some Snorkel pens may be store numbers. I recently came across information that a Snorkel demonstrator was engraved as follows:

STORE NO 1130
LOUISVILLE, KY.

I do not mean that it had these words as an imprint. It was engraved this way, like an owner's name.

This is just conjecture but it's possible some stores might have ordered their loaners imprinted from the factory with their store numbers. It may also be possible that some stores had all the pens they sold imprinted this way to identify them as originally from their store if they had a policy of repairing only pens they had sold. We have seen that at least one number, 1127, appears on our list twice.

Hi Ruth,

Thanks for the info about your numbered Snorkel.  What model is it?  Are you able to post a picture of the numbered imprint?

I think the pen is a Snorkel Admiral.  I haven't quite figured out how to post photos with the new software for the site, because I had been so used to the old "Upload" feature.

It may be a while before I get a chance to even get a photo taken of the pen (I usually like doing it outside during the day when it's sunny because the lighting is better, but have a bad feeling that there may not be much of that this upcoming week -- it was sunny but cold early this morning, but by mid-afternoon it was (while pushing 50°F) definitely overcast around here, and I think I heard an upcoming forecast which mentioned a four letter word beginning with "S" and ending with "W".... :(

A black Snorkel with barrel number 2251 has turned up on eBay. The photo isn’t all that clear, but I confirmed the number with the seller. The pen has a No. 5 nib with a white dot cap. So either an Admiral with a cap swap, or a Statesman/Valiant with a nib swap. I will add it to the list as an Admiral.

@bhavini, I really like the Sailor Hocoro dip pen. It’s inexpensive, easy to clean, and if you get one with a nib that has a feed, you can get quite a few lines of writing before you have to dip again. I have a fude nib, which I use for swatching and line variation while writing.

What's a relatively cheap tool for a newbie to use to try out new inks, without inking up a pen? I've a bunch of ink samples on their way but I just want to play around with them before I decide on which ones I want to buy more of for writing. I've never used anything except a fountain pen to write with ink before.

It's gonna end where 1929 left us: a world war, shambles, and 'growth by rebuilding'. That's the conservative view of cycling history --and the big plan. Even if our generations perish.
    • lamarax 11 Apr 0:49
Of course trade wars are much, more important than the prices of consumer products. The true intention is to weaken the dollar, so that the Chinese start selling their US held debt. But the dollar being the defacto world reserve currency, it doesn't lose value that easily. So the idea is to target trade through artificially raising prices. Problem is, inflation will skyrocket. Good luck with that.

In Europe, the only (truly) American produced brand is Esterbrook AFAIK. Tariffs will make Esterbrook products compete on the same level as some high-end European brands (let's say Aurora), while clearly the product is manufactured to compete on a much lower price level.
    • lamarax 11 Apr 0:24
So let's say you want to buy a Montblanc or whatever. You pay the current tariff on top of the usual price, unless your local distributor is willing to absorb (some) of the difference
    • lamarax 11 Apr 0:20
Tariffs are paid by the importer, not the exporter.
    • TheQuillDeal 10 Apr 2:44
Can anyone explain how the tariff war will affect fountain pen prices??

Cappuccino should work. Frothy milk also helps to lubricate the nib. But it has to be made by a barista.

No replies required to my complaints about the Pelikan. A friend came to the rescue with some very magnification equipment - with the images thrown to a latge high res screen. Technology is a wonderful thing. Thanks to Mercian for the reply. I had been using the same paper & ink for sometime when the "singing" started. I have a theory but no proof that nibs get damaged when capping the pen. 👍
    • Mercian 22 Oct 22:28
@FineFinerFinest: sometimes nib-'singing' can be lessened - or even cured - by changing the ink that one is putting through the pen, or the paper that one is using. N.b. *sometimes*. Good luck

I'm not expecting any replies to my question about the singing Pelikan nib. It seems, from reading the background, that I am not alone. It's a nice pen. It's such a pity Pelikan can't make decent nibs. I have occasionally met users who tell me how wonderful their Pelikan nib is. I've spent enough money to know that not everyone has this experience. I've worked on nibs occasionally over forty years with great success. This one has me beaten. I won't be buying any more Pelikan pens. 👎

Back to FPN after 14 years. First thing I noticed is that I could not see a FS forum. What has changed? 🤔

Hello! Is there a thread anywhere 'round here where one can post self-composed poetry? If not, would it be alright if I made one? I searched on google, but to no avail...

I have several Parker Roller Ball & Fiber Tip refills in the original packaging. Where and how do I sell them? The couple that I've opened the ink still flowed when put to paper. Also if a pen would take the foller ball refill then it should take the fiber tip as well? Anyway it's been awhile and I'm want to take my message collection beyond the few pieces that I have... Meaning I don't have a Parker these refills will fit in 🙄

Recently was lucky enough to buy a pristine example of the CF crocodile ball with the gold plating. Then of course I faced the same problem we all have over the years ,of trying to find e refill. Fortunately I discovered one here in the U.K. I wonder if there are other sources which exist in other countries, by the way they were not cheap pen

Somewhat confusing and off-putting ones, as said to me by my very honest friends. I don't have an X account though :<

I have a Conway Stewart Trafalgar set. It was previously owned by actor Russell Crowe and includes a letter from him. Can anyone help me with assessing its value?

There must be a couple of places here to share artworks.
    • T.D. Rabbit 15 July 12:45
Hullo! I really like making ink doodles, and I'd like to share a few. Anywhere on the site I can do so? Thanks in advance!
