Yeah, I got lucky.  The listing said "high end pen sets" but the photos were not particularly good.  And of course almost didn't see the Parker box on the table at first (there was a lot of stuff like watches and jewelry and a very nice small statue of a knight on horseback but which cost ten TIMES what the 75 set did :o).

I like being the one being IN the "Sumgai" stories! :D

In yesterday's case, I got there early enough that there were only a couple of people in line in front of me, and the table where the pens and watches and such were right in the living room, close to the front door.  But of course I could have also ended up with a big fat goose egg of nothing -- all the other pens seemed to be BPs.  And even the one I went to recently that DID have a lot of FPs at it?  The prices were okay but not great, and most of the pens that weren't desk pens were on a table in the hallway outside the apartment where the sale was being held -- and the lighting was so bad that I couldn't tell the colors or read stuff like date codes on the Parker pens, even with the flashlight app on my phone....  :gaah:

Hi, Carguy.  I, too, love the yellows.  I hesitate to ink them up for very long, as I worry about staining from ink.  What’s been your experience?

Sorry that I’m just seeing this. I have had some issues with ink stains that is visible from inside the hood section, however, my bigger issue tends to be the lack of precision in how the parts fit together in some cases.

With the very light-colored versions of the Kullock 51s, staining is an issue, as you point out.  I also agree with you that the Kullock models often don’t “fit together” as neatly as the authentic Parkers.  For example, I purchased an empty 51 Vac in a dark grey color from Argentina.  My plan was to use Parker parts inside.  I found a collector-feed-breathing tube-nib combination that fit fine.

However, on the back end, the pen came with a place-holder, screw-in insert that was shorter than an actual filler unit.  That shouldn’t have been a problem, except that for unknown reasons, the inner screw threads just beyond the place-holder had a pinkish glue that blocked the remaining threads.  The result was that although I could place a functional filling unit in the back, the unit would not screw in all the way (in the usual fashion), and there is a meaningful gap where one sees filler threads between the screwed-in blind cap and the barrel.  The pen writes and doesn’t leak, but the gap is very visible.

Before inserting the filler, I tried dry heat at 150 degrees F, scraping of the glue, etc., but nothing even made a dent in the glue.  I haven’t gotten a reply from the seller as to how to deal with this issue and whether its other empty customized Vacs have the same glue ring.  Thus, for now, I won’t buy another empty Vac from that seller.

I just received the promised video from Argentina concerning the “pink glue” problem I reported.  Turns out the pink thing is not glue, but rather a plastic ring screwed into that portion of the barrel rear.

The video shows what I think is best described as a jewelers burnishing tool with a wooden handle and a tapered triangular metal shank coming out of it.  You place the shank far enough to engage the pink ring and slowly unscrew the ring (turning the pen rather than the shank), which comes out on the shank.  After doing that, you can fully screw in a Vac filler unit and then fully screw in the blind cap.

I searched for such a tool on eBay and saw a few sellers who offered what appeared to be such a tool.  I specifically focused on “tapered” and “triangular.”  I ordered one at a total all-in price of $20.84.  I’ll report back later when I receive it and try to use it in this case.

Wow -- just wow!  That's a really attractive pen!  Love the material they used for the cap and barrel.

Nice find!

Thank you!

The Striated Burgundy is a lovely pattern. It sets off the trim very well.

Canada and England used some rather unusual and attractive stock for pen production during the 1930s, and quite some way into the wartime years (UK wartime, that is, beginning in 1939).

I was looking at Tony Fischier's site a little while ago, because I didn't know very much about the Televisor models.  Now I want a blue one!  [My wallet!  My poor poor wallet! :crybaby:]

The ring threaded into the barrel is the seat for the diaphragm. Try screwing it in deeper, it needs to be there for the seal.

The fantasy 51s often have the seat as a separate part. I assume this is to simplify making the barrel.  You may need to seal the threads on the seat to prevent air leaking in.

The seller (*everything) sent me a video showing how to remove the pink ring, which the seller indicated should be done so that a filler can screw in properly.  The pink ring was placed only to limit how far the place-holder stub could screw in, not as a seat for the diaphragm.  I don’t know why the seller felt it necessary to screw in a place-holder in the first place; anyone willing to purchase an empty 51 would know that he/she needed to place a filling unit in the back end.

I’ll be interested to hear how this tool works. I have several Vac 51 bodies that I haven’t put together yet so let’s see.

I just bought an inexpensive UK teal Parker 45 Deluxe.  I am not familiar with this line of 45, it looks like a fancy Arrow with gold trim and 14k nib. I have some screenshots of dealer pictures, but the lighting is not the best. The true color is somewhere in between the two pictures, I’m guessing.

The 45-pens Deluxe are good daily-use pens with nice colours. The cap section and barrel of the same colour are more attractive to collectors.

It’s a very attractive pen. When I was sent an offer, I didn’t hesitate. Most of my 45s are domestic (US), the Arrows are all CT and Octanium nibs. I like the sheer variety of 45s from around the world, and the familiarity of my first school pen.

14K "England" nibs are my favourite (if I can judge on the few 45 I have), in terms of grind and softness. I hope you enjoy that very pretty 45!

Do your Vac 51 bodies have a similar ring?  Did you get them from Argentina?  I’m hoping that the tool I ordered from eBay is the right size.  I’ll keep you all posted.

Thank you! I have a few English Parkers, mostly Slimfolds (the open nib aerometric) and those are wonderful and soft.
