The brown paper bag thing may have been common on your com but it, wasn’t, and never was recommend by the nib mechanics that do nib work as a job.

It was this com.

Said that....but there was a time when micro-mesh was exotic and hard to get....and said pro's prefer micro-mesh.....having learned how to use it. Richard didn't send two junk pens with his deluxe smoothing kit for nothing.

Again smoothing vs removing just drag.....one's a horse the other's a pony.

In reference to P. T. Barnum; to advise for free is foolish, ........busybodies are ill liked by both factions.

Ransom Bucket cost me many of my pictures taken by a poor camera that was finally tossed. Luckily, the Chicken Scratch pictures also vanished.

The cheapest lessons are from those who learned expensive lessons. Ignorance is best for learning expensive lessons.

I know tipping is very hard material but does nib tipping material oxidise if not used for writing for some time?

Could this partly explain the "writing in" period in new and disused pens - the tarnished layer is being removed by friction?

On 2 occasions I have cleaned and used pens disused for over 40 years.

A Parker 75 and a Parker 61.  Neither of them had any issues with the tipping. They wrote smoothly straight away after so many years.
