Pilot Cartridge Violet

Note: This is the regular Pilot Violet cartridge. This is NOT the Pilot Mixable Violet cartridge.

Pilot Cartridge Violet is a gorgeous violet ink with good flow and lubrication. Some bleeding and feathering can be observed on cheaper paper, and the drytime is a bit long. It is quite water resistant.
This ink shows different colour variations on different paper. Actually I find it less interesting on good paper like Tomoe River, surprisingly. I love it more on copy paper (Clairefontaine 80g) despite the feathering and bleeding. As it dries it reflects a golden light, and it finally dries into a complex colour that varies between different shades of violet. It has a blue halo and the wetter part is a somewhat paint-like dark violet. Truly amazing. This effect is less drastic on Tomoe River, but there’s a slight golden sheen.

Thats a pretty cool ink! I want to try it, thanks to your review. Does it only come in cartridges? My only Pilot pen for compatibility is a Vanishing Point, which is pretty limiting.

Yes I believe it's cartridge only. I used a syringe to fill it in my Pelikan.

Great review!

I have tried their brown ink - very nice but a bit more reddish than I like.

Seeking a Parker Duofold Centennial cap top medallion/cover/decal.
My Mosaic Black Centennial MK2 lost it (used to have silver color decal).

Preferably MK2. MK3 or MK1 is also OK as long as it fits.
Preferably EU.

Intensity beat me to the punch. I was ALSO about to ask if it only came in cartridges. Which is a bummer -- and for me, at this point, "cartridge only" is pretty much a dealbreaker. Because it looks like a really gorgeous ink -- I can just envision it coming out of my Light Grey Decimo. Except for the fact that I really would rather use a converter and bottled ink.

Thanks for the review though.

"It's very nice, but frankly, when I signed that list for a P-51, what I had in mind was a fountain pen."

On the other hand cartridges are an inexpensive way to try out an ink, given you don't mind the hassle of having to syringe-fill the pen.

I was going to say but what if I do like the ink and want to use it more? Then I realized, who am I kidding, this ink would probably be an occasional novelty, not requiring a full bottle. In that regard a set of cartridges could be good for very occasional use.

Has anyone found a bottled ink as dusty purple as these cartridges?

I received a box of the cartridges with some pens today. Gorgeous, but I would prefer something in a bottle.

Will work for pens...

Hi @AmandaW.

From what I see in the photos, something like Lamy Crystal Azurite can be similar concerning intensity and shading. There are many inks around in this category, some more dark, others more dusty. Find the right ink based on a photo can be a bit tricky.

Have a look at Inkswatch.com in the purple category. There you find all the 50 shades from very bright to almost black next to each other. 😃

One life!

In person it is not dusty at all. It is very vibrant.  The Sailor Butterfly ink is as vibrant.  Also, an inexpensive choice is Noodler's Purple People Eater (aka Purple).

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).
