What's Your Most Recent Mb Purchase? 2020 Edition

zaddick - 10 MB 149 pens I had were pens I got from an antique store at $30.00 each. The antique store owner did not know the worth of those pens. The pens were from an estate where they were sitting in a drawer unused from the 1980s thru 2019. There was nothing really wrong with the pens, really. After soaking the pens and flushing them out, the pens all worked. But decades of sitting in a desk drawer had caused the pens to have some surface microscratches, and a few of the pens had medium nibs that were not smooth, or had the tines misaligned. I sold them all for $375.00 each, sold them all to friends. I think some of the pens will be making trips to Mr Masuyama or any of the other reputable nibmeisters.

I think, after getting the MB 149 from a fellow FPN member, I might next think about getting a Namiki Emperor fp with a fine nib, but, I just dont seem to find one in the used market. But, I am still thinking....... :)

Well that is a good deal and a nice win for you and friends. Thank you for sharing. i have yet to find such a good deal on a 149, even just a nib.

 

The Namiki #50 urushi is a nice pen but quite different in feel. Once in a while decent deals can be had, but not often and they don't last long. You might also like the Sailor King of Pen in Ebonite body. It has a nice feel in the hand and is just enough different than a 149 without being completely foreign. Also way more affordable than a Namiki as long as you don't want the urushi KOP.

Yes I noticed that. The pamphlet seems to refer to all the MB Permanent inks including permanent Blue and Black. I've been using Permanent Blue since I got it and it flows just fine. It's odd MB would include a permanent ink with the 149 flex pen when they don't recommend using it with this nib. Oh well, don't want to take any chances, so will run their Midnight Blue (non IG version). But I also want to try some colorful inks with this nib too. The flex nib shades wonderfully, so will be interesting to try it with a variety of inks.

Following the Milan penshow, now I have a Montblanc 214 fountain pen with a corresponding pencil. I wanted a coral red Montblanc for some time, and the price of this set was too good to let him go.

I finally found a MB 166 Black and Gold in "excellent" condition for under $200 including shipping Yay!.(I bought it from a seller that doesn't normally sell pens, so we'll see what excellent actually means when it shows up.) It's coming all the way from the UK, so I won't be seeing it for at least a couple of weeks.

 

I'm sorry MB discontinued these. I really like my Bordeaux (Burgundy?) 166. And now, I'm wondering how many different kinds of 166 there are.

 

Update: Looks like those two and a black 166 with platinum fittings, but that was it.

An email from Tom Kellie today:

I went out for grocery shopping today at midday.

The city looks to be roughly 35% back to normal.

The subway cars and buses had more ridership, albeit far lower than before.

Shopping areas were partially opened, yet almost no customers anywhere, including in a large French-owned supermarket.

Improvement remains a gradual, step-by-step process at all levels.

Heavy security and rigorous health checks remain the norm everywhere.

Both Yubi and I are doing fine, feeling blessed to be spared the severe discomfort of tens of millions of others.

I checked with the Canadian Montblanc Repair center in Mississauga about using Permanent Ink in my 149 flex pen. Here is their response:

 

I wrote: I have the new MB 149 Calligraphy Flex fountain pen. Is it safe to use the Montblanc Permanent Blue Ink in the pen? The little pamphlet that came along with the Elixir Calligraphy Collection Yellow Gold Ink states “Do Not Use with Flex Nib”. Just want to confirm if this warning apply to all MB Permanent Inks in relation to the flex nib.

MB response: Thank you for placing your confidence in our company and we are pleased to be at your service. It is safe to use any of ink in your pen as long as that is Montblanc Ink. We hope that this information will prove helpful.

I will resume to use the MB Permanent Blue anyway in my flex nib because I love that ink, and has not exhibited any issues in my other Montblanc pens.

Calligraphy yellow gold ink is not a limited edition but production could be low. Yellow gold is one of my favorite inks, my gold leaf M nib has yellow gold in it. The golden color is unique and write well. I recommend you use the gold yellow ink other than flex, you won't regret.
