The most recent Montblanc purchase is that of a Montblanc 142 Masterpiece with a fine nib, that is the perfect sibling to the Montblanc Meisterstück 142 with a BB nib that I got in March. My new lovely arrived today and I was veeeery pleased not only to find that the fine nib is just wonderful but also that the seller threw in a gorgeous red Montblanc leather etui as a very welcome surprise.

Congratulations, I have a vintage 144 with a BB nib which is probably the favourite of all my nibs.

not a pen, but still montblanc:

a glass of egyptian blue ink

a glass of ultramarine ink (orange sheen)

The ultramarine looks a lot like MB Royal Blue: very purply.

Would you say that the Egyptian Blue is as green as Rohrer &Klingner Blu Mare, J. Herbin Bleu Pervenche and Kyanite du Népal (sparkles aside).

I'm looking for the bluest inks among Montblanc (has to be Montblanc) Egyptian, China and Mayan Blue

Also, would you say that Egyptian Blue is unsaturated (based on the lines seen through the ink from the paper)?

I received a 142 with a fine nib on the very same day! It feels great, better than the 144 in regards to weight and balance, but sadly the one I received appears to have a broken piston :(

Can you describe why you think it is broken? Maybe (please accept my apologies if you are familiar with that mechanism) the telescope piston just feels wrong? I know it did irritate me first. Or does it fail to draw ink?

Yes, when I first got my 142 I thought there was a problem with the filler but I soon got used to it. At the other end of the scale I have just received a 128G. Just ordered a new ink sack and look forward to see how it performs, it has a BB nib.

I am familiar with the mechanism from two 144's. I can feel the two-step mechanism working very clearly when turning the piston knob, but there is absolutely no movement of the piston rod, so I'm assuming something has come apart inside the mechanism...

Oh, too bad, I am sorry for you as you probably were looking forward to a beautiful writer and now this ... is there a repair person in your area?

Also a 144G, with a nice crisp B. I have large hands, but i prefer the lighter weight of the xx4 pens. It needs a new cork seal, but i knew that going in.

Dear Julie, I think you might be some sort of magical being - inspired by you the Cosmos told me to try my hand at the 142 once more, and now it did move! Truly a miracle! Thank you ;)

The F nib is slightly wide, exactly the same width as my 042G in M, but for me that is only a boon.

Those are indeed some very nice pens. Nice shading and a stricking flowy hand-writing. The red Etui is nice touch of course. Enjoy your new aquisitions. I never heard of a vendor who throws in such a lovely extra in Deutschland though, enjoy.

Oh, thank you, both for the compliment and the good wishes!

I acquired the MB 142 MP from a private seller in a German fountain pen forum, where the atmosphere is pretty friendly and generous.

Ah, a private seller, very good deal indeed, a pointer to the forum would be most helpful. I had presumed (wrongly so) it was a regular Montblanc dealer. The regular dealer folks don't seem to be so generous (at least not to me) , In fact I picked up a 149 with the calligraphy nib (image below) at the Düs Boutique just last week and they.. shall we just say, we not attempting to be generous

Apologies for the crappy phone pic and the bad writing in the background. It was the first time that the pen was being used and the flex-nib and I were trying to get to know each other over coffee. That said, the GvFC Gulf blue in your picture has demonstrably good shading on the BB nib which seems to accentuate your writing. Congratulations once again on your Zwillinge.

Oh, that is your writing!?! Beautiful! :)

Of course I gladly point you to my source, I got my pen in the deep end of the German PenExchange forum, a friendly and helpful bunch!

I wish you loads of fun with your MB Calligraphy, these nibs can be amazing if you get a good one (which seems to be case with yours, obviously), all with the convenience of a modern yet classic piston filler. These giants are a bit big for my small hands, but the nib ... is a dream. Enjoy! (And treat us with more of your handwriting, please!)

Unfortunately yes, it is indeed my writing and thank you for the kind words; I need to practice at least for a couple of years before I get the courage to post anything online.

I'll try the PenExchange forum, obwohl Ich nur ein bisschen Deutsch kann, hopefully folks will forgive me for my linguistic incursions.

On the MB 149, you are right, if one has small hands, these behemoths (Sailor KOP, MB149, M1000 etc) could be a challenge despite the nice nib. Thank you for the kind words and wishes again.

  • 2 weeks later...

Hard to believe no one has bought anything in like a week. :)

I just picked up a single bottle of ink.

Well, I did receive a Burgundy Little Prince Le Grand (EF) and a bottle of the LPP ink last week :D .

Unfortunately, I've been so busy that I hardly have time to stop by lately...

The pen writes very nicely. But the 149 calligraphy is significantly finer than the 146 EF.
