Which Dark Green Ink For A Lamy?

AMlines

Recommended Posts

I am getting a Lamy Safari (Fine). I have been writing with blue inks so far but am now interested in exploring green inks.

However, I want to avoid shimmering and other flashy greens. I'd rather go for a green that is on the darker side. I want to use it for a lot of writing (note taking etc.) mostly on FP friendly paper but at times on regular A4s. For that reason I want the ink to be reasonably easy to clean, have some moisture resistance (so that it'll still be legible after some years).

For obvious reasons I am looking at a Lamy ink and the Peridot seems to be an okay fit. Are there other options that better fit my requirements and/or that you recommend I look at?

Thanks!

P.S.- I also use a Pelikan M205 and Platinum Plaisir (both Fine).

Hi AMlnes,

I can't believe my top choice matches JetPens, but it does: Pelikan Dark Green.

It is a fantastic ink and the color harkens back to White Forest, a LE by MB a few years ago.

Diamine Sherwood is another great choice, (but it is a wet ink).

My absolute favourite ink is Lamy Petrol, which is a wonderful dark teal (almost black). However, that's no longer available, which is a real pity.

One of my favourite inks for meetings at work is Diamine Beethoven. It's a dark green and sufficiently conservative to be used in an office environment, but clearly green (and more green than Lamy Petrol). It is worth being aware that Diamine Beethoven has received a bit of a pasting in reviews (allegedly having flow issues), but for me it's been really great (although it's not moisture resistant at all).

I'm having a green moment right now so...

Diamine Dark Forest, a dark green that leans a little blue.

Diamine Green Black, as dark but a bit less saturated and more true green.

Herbin Vert Empire, even less saturated but lovingly so, vintag-y and watercolor-y. Made me fall in love with green very recently.

Iroshizuku Hoteison, the darkest, very black looking and easiest to smuggle into conservative environments. It's liquid butter, but it's the limited edition for 150 years of Pilot, might be a problem.

Organics Studio James Joyce Hunter Green, as dark as Hoteison but more intensely green, very pleasant as well to write with.

Also on my radar but yet to try:

Edelstein Olivine

Sailor Miruai

Noodler's Zhivago

Robert Oster Moss

GvFC Moss Green, a bit on the pricey side but does offer water resistance. See lgsoltek's review - https://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/topic/327112-graf-von-faber-castell-moss-green/

The Diamine Dark Forest is quite similar, though I don't know about it's water resistance, the main difference I've noticed is the sheen on the Moss is more gold-ish where the DF is red.

It's hard work to tell which is Old Harry when everybody's got boots on.

I’ve experimented with a number of dark greens, and I’d echo votes for GvFC Moss Green / Diamine Dark Forest as somewhat similar well behaved dark greens, and for Diamine Green Black, which is in the same range of darkness but with no discernible blue component to my eyes. I enjoy them all. Three Oysters Black Moss is a murky dark green that looks almost black if you enjoy murky inks.

Thanks. This looks good and I'd love to try it out on my M205.

Btw, the same bottle is going for cheaper on Amazon. I am curious - do you recommend buying inks from Amazon, or like fountain pens, is it better to stick to reliable sellers?

After all, if the ink is sealed, it won't make a difference whether it's sold on Amazon or another seller.

Hi AMlines,

I've bought a lot of ink through Amazon; especially MB inks and Pelikan... particularly Blue-Black because it was banned in the US a few years ago. Also Quink Permanent Blue, which isn't sold here, either, (although Endless Pens carries it now).

I've also bought most of my 3776's and my Duofolds through Amazon. No problems. 👍

ETA: Yeah, you're going to love Pelikan Dark Green, too. 👍👍👍

I'm enjoying Diamine Sherwood Green right now, which would be another dark green to consider. Well behaved.

Many people like Lamy Petrol. I am not one of them. And now it is harder to find and more expensive.

One of my favorite dark greens is DeAtramentis Pine Green. It is dark, dries fairly quickly and has some water resistance. It is also easy to clean.

Another ink which is very dark Kuretake Kyara Dark Green. This is very dark, but very nice ink. https://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/topic/340734-kuretake-kyara-dark-green/

One of my favorite inks on the green side of things is Robert Oster's Velvet Storm. I think it is a very close match to Lamy Petrol but a hair more green.

The current setup

1. Conid Regular AntwerpPen/Naginata Cross Concord- Sailor Nioi-Sumire (three years and counting!)

2. 1920-something Wahl-Eversharp BCHR Oversize Gold Seal/Manifold- Aurora Black

3. Pelikan M800 Tortoise/O3B- Kobe Ginza gold sepia

1936 Vacumatic Oversize Brown Pearl- Rest in (several) pieces. You will be missed!

4. Pelikan M805 Stresemann extra fine- Aurora Black

Yep Lamy Petrol works well. Not as impressed with Peridot, especially not at its precious high price.

Tried 4001 Dark Green... hasn't grown on me yet, I still prefer previous 4001 Brilliant Green... which looks darker & more vivid.

Also big fan of Quink Green, it has a bold impression that's almost regal.

Later bought Monteverde Green... not bad, close to Quink Green but feels less subtantial.

Darned it, why are all my faves all Retired :(

Perhaps Sailor Miruai? A true dark green.

Less is More - Ludwig Mies van der Rohe

Less is a Bore - Robert Venturi
