+1, making three of us that prefers broad nibs!

I spent a few years ago what seemed like a lot of money to order a double broad oblique nib from England to replace the useless (for me) "needle nosed" nibs on some 51s.  It was probably a year or more before I had collected the Kullock replacement bodies I wanted before I sent the lot away to be installed.

The replacement nib graces a Forest Green aero which is using an incorrect (Yes, I know but prefer it) hammered sterling blue diamond clipped cap & is now the Parker 51 that is my favorite of the lot.  The Kullocks all have broad nibs but the formerly expensive OBB nib, whose cost I have long forgotten brings me the most joy.

Hi BarkingPig,

I'd love to see that Forest/Silver 51. :puddle:

Unlike you, I never use Bold/Broad nibs because I write too small and my handwriting would result in a blob of ink.

I bought these larger nibbed pens when I found them just because I had nothing like them in my little collection.

Hi Glenn,

I generally only buy colors and nibs that I Iike; although, I have been known to buy colors I'm not crazy about if I'm just one or two pens shy from completing a series, but I've never purchased nibs I wouldn't like/use.

Well, we all have our little idiosyncrasies; or we wouldn't be here... and what is more... I would wager your collection isn't all that "little."  :D

And, while not a 51, perhaps the best "modern" hooded nib pen Parker made, mine sees weekly use since new, and is still going strong. Although the Jewel fell out years ago. The 100

Hi Audog,

Nice. I think that's only the third Honey White one I've seen.  Congratulations.

Hi Sean,

It is good to see that I'm not alone in such an approach :)

That's why my Parker collection looks quite odd due to missing some colours and nibs... :)

And on another note:

Happy St Patrick's Day! ☘️ :)

Beautiful pen...

Is it with a Fine nib?

Last year I stupidly missed a chance to buy the one in NOS condition, and since then I have not seen any offers of it in Honey White...

But I like and enjoy my P100 in Cobalt Black :)

Hi Como,

I hit it off with the P51 right away. I think it's the only non c/c or piston fill pen that i can say that about. I've never been that crazy about vintage filling systems and all their complexities, but the 51 Aerometric is fairly simple to clean and it's bulletproof  - and the pen fits and feels like an English tailored glove.

- Sean  :)

@cornicheHi Sean, I am interested in filling systems in general, vintage and modern. Among the vintage ones, I like safety, plunger, telescopic piston. The Aerometric is neither the simplest nor the most complex. Though it's not as easy as lever-fillers and button-fillers, it's easy enough to take apart. Spare parts are relatively easy to find. In this aspect, Parker 51 also makes a good pen to have in terms of maintenance. Great design, good maintenance. The only thing is that I never find a nice bouncy juicy Parker 51 nib, nor a relatively flexible one.

Hi Red,

Yeah, I'm not a "completist" type to the point I buy colors or nibs I don't like; especially the latter.

Thank you. 🍀🍀🍀  God bless.  :)

Hi Como,

Nah, you won't find bounce or flex in your typical 51 nib. They use a conical, manifold type nib, designed for triplicate forms, etc., and with a hooded nib; flex pretty much cancels itself out.

As far as juiciness goes, I've had good luck with the 51s I've bought from Ernesto @ Parker51.com; Teri Morris @ Peyton Street Pens and Danny Fudge @ The Write Pen.

I won't bother to tell you where my dryer writers came from.  ;)

"Typical" "51" nib is not how I'd put it: unless I'm mistaken, Parker never made any "51" nibs with flex.

As for hooded nibs preventing flex, this is simply not true. Look at vintage Aurora 88s. The Parker "51" hood only prevents flex because it 'smothers' the tines along their whole length.

Hello Ele,

No, of course Parker never offered any flex nibs on the 51s; for obvious reasons.

When I said "typically"; I was referring to "bouce." There is a difference between flex and bounce - with the former being more extreme. As I went on to say, 51 nibs were conical shaped - like Sheaffer's Triumph nib - and designed for strength, (for carbon forms, etc.) - not flex or bounce. You don't ask a cat to bark and you don't ask a dog to meow.

Aurora 88s have some flex because they're not hooded nibs; they're SEMI-hooded nibs - that makes a huge difference between an 88 and a 51.

Besides which, I find it best to speak in general terms, (e.g., "typically"), on forums such as this, because you'll always have that anal obsessive type guy who'll jump up and say, in June of '49, Parker made 3 51s with a semi-flex nib. :D

As Sean Corniche notes, the tubular P-51 nib cannot be flexed, and neither can Sheaffer's Triumph nib. Parker and Sheaffer were selling what the market wanted, and Americans wrote with stiffer nibs. That's how American school kids learned to write: clearly and quickly, in a script that could be read easily.

The Palmer Method was one of the most popular:

"The object of the Palmer Method is to teach rapid, easily-executed, business writing. It has not been written to exploit any one’s skill as a pen artist. It aims to be of use to those who are ambitious to become good, practical business writers. The lessons it contains are not experimental, but have been the means of guiding millions of boys and girls, young men and women to a good business style of writing."

https://palmermethod.com/

I learned Zaner-Bloser in the 1950s. We started with pencils, imitating the letters posted above the black-board, and, around 4th grade, graduated to fountain pens. Most of us, by the way, used Sheaffer school pens.

Hi Aysedasi, BarkingPig & Glenn,

I'm glad I'm not the only one, too. Sometimes, reading the threads here and elsewhere; I begin to think I am.

We should join forces and become the BNC: the Broad Nib Coalition.  :D (Which would include stubs, of course).  :)

Just yesterday on eBay I saw a couple of 51s and 2 61s with Broad nibs offered by UK seller and 2-3 ones from the US sellers.

Besides, there were about six P75s with Broad nibs from the Us, too.

That's not quite right.  While the vast majority of Triumph nibs are nails, I have a couple that have a little bounce to them and there are rare flexible versions.  (See here, here, and here, for example.)  I am dying to find a flexible one.  They -- and the Triumph music nib -- are among my white whales.
