And, in my opinion, the much smaller Esterbrook vintage nibs would appear dwarfed in the new Estie.

Hi CorgiCoupe,

Here you go; I'll let everyone draw their own conclusions:

ETA: Heck, I could buy a whole lot of Vectors for the price on one of the "revamped" 51s.

🤔 steel version at Endless Pens little over 3 Andrew Jacksons or @inkstainedruth pricing 😉 sold out the pre-order lot!

Maybe Parker is listening to bulk order pricing or folks really want this pen; buyers gonna buy!

I was thinking about vintage items I enjoy. I shave with 100 year old tools, listen to radios older than I am as well as Parker made in '42. Should I mention that my pocket watches are old than me by 3 years and one is old than my grandfather. Yes, they work.

Vintage is not for everyone, but for me, it is. I do not feel I am experiencing less.

Obviously obvious, Brother Bob. :) However, the "degree of difference" is more or less glaring; depending on your own personal POV.

So, I withheld my own thoughts and am letting everyone judge for themselves.  👍

OK OK, I'll ask.  What did you pay for a Plum 51.

I paid a little under $72 US including shipping.  Mind you, it was a Demi, and a user-grade one.  And a few years ago at that, and the previous eBay listing I'd bid on (another Plum Demi, but with a rolled gold cap, went for quite a bit more).  But Farmersmum got a full-sized one the same weekend (I didn't pay attention to that listing because the seller called it black in the header :headsmack: and because I was so focused on the one I'd bid on) and he paid only paid $40.

But a user grade vintage 51 still worked great after just a good flushing out.  And, unlike a lot of my 51s, it actually has a medium nib (rather than F or EF).  I only have two other 51s that are NOT F or EF -- the Midnight Blue Aero I got in 2017 at the Triangle Pen Show (also an M) and the English-made Navy Gray Aero from the Saturday auction at that same show, which has I think an OM or OB nib.  But the auction price on the Navy Gray (the most I'd ever paid for a 51, even with repairs on some of the 51 Vacs) included the buyer's premium.

So, all you wonderful Plum lovers, just know that I am not the one bidding against you. There is reason they are rare, same with those butt ugly butterscotch pens....LOL!!

They are not rare.

FarmBoy is right.  They are *rarer* than other colors, because they were only made for the 1948-49 model year.  But given that Parker made 12 MILLION 51s and then stopped counting, over something like a twenty year run as their flagship model.  So while Plum is the rarest color of the Aerometrics, there are probably still thousands (maybe even tens of thousands) Plummers out there.  I only have one -- and not full sized at that (not sure how many mitto has ).

While I'd love to get a full-sized Plum Aero someday, I'm not completely freaking out about not having one, and I'm not paying an arm and a leg and another arm for one, either....  If it happens it happens; and if it doesn't?  I've still got the Plum Demi.

So, as I understand, the retailers are now shipping these new 51s, right?

Meanwhile, Parker still doesn't mention it on their website

My pre-order arrived today, and it’s in my package lockbox. I’m gonna pick it up in the morning, probably, and I look forward to testing it out this weekend.

Perhaps rare was the wrong choice of word. How about "one doesn't see them often and when  you do, they cost a lot".  Plus, often when you think you have one it turns out to not be plum? Of course I am generalizing and some find them for fifity cents in a  junk drawer at the estate sale.

The difference is that you're talking about a $30 pen and a $6 converter.  Whereas, the "new 51s" cost more than double the retail price of a Safari.  Heck they cost more than I paid for my Plum Demi 51, which of course is probably a better fill system overall than on a c/c pen.

If I'm gonna buy a c/c filler Parker?  It's gonna be a Vector -- not a "revamped" 51.

Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth

ETA: Heck, I could buy a whole lot of Vectors for the price on one of the "revamped" 51s.  Heck, I paid around $13 for one of the reissued French production Vectors about 3 years ago, so I could probably buy 5 Vectors *plus* the twist converters for them, for the price of one glorified Vector.  And let's make no mistake about this.  The "new" 51 is just that.  An expensive, glorified Vector.

You picked the highest priced “51” to make your point compared to the lowest priced Lamy. You failed to recognize that no sub-$200 Lamy comes with a converter. That comparison is more appropriate.

Would you please post your review of the “new” “51” so we can evaluate it as well. Photos please.

If you position is “I already own a 1942 Parkerman Vacufold Deluxe that I got in 1963 for $2 why would I ever buy this new thing?”

OK. That is an honest opinion.
But, why all the hate for a pen that’s of a completely different time and condition?

“My 1940’s XXXXX is better than anything new out there.”

Good!  Be happy with your pen/watch/car whatever. Let other be happy with their new pen/watch/car whatever.

To quote my daughter when she asked about a new car that looked like a ‘60s car “My generation doesn’t do Retro.”

Like you, others are just expressing an opinion. No need to challange Ruth. She's obviously knows what's she talking about. Thinking honest opinions of others amounts to "hate" is nonsense.

Hi Chuck,

My sincerest apologies, my friend. I don't know how that happened.  Well, actually, I think I do. Theres a guy named Bob at my club who liked Esterbrook pens in his youth and we've had several conversations about them - even though he has declined my offers for a free Model J - he doesn't want to go back to "ink pens," but he loved their "marketing gimmick" of a different nib for every occupation or use. :D

Sorry, Brother Chuck; I've had a lot on my plate lately.
