Hi Esty & Ferocity,

I stand corrected.  The TRUE original with the ribbed barrel didn't have a chrome tip, but it was WAY before my time and a pen I have never even seen in real life - so it often escapes my memory.

To me, the "original" Jotters are the ones I grew up with in the '70s & '80s.

But thank you for the pictures and memory refresher, Ferocity.

What?
It comes in a cardboard clam shell box and includes a converter!!!!

Hi Glenn,

Na, that's the big rub - NO converter!

I can sort of overlook that on the chrome base model, (Core), but it's a downright insult on the $250 gold Deluxe model.

Which makes me think these pens are more for the gift market; rather than the "user" market.  :(

But on the other hand, a big majority of their customers probably will never use a converter or even know what it is. If that’s the case, the inclusion of a converter would just be an environmentally unfriendly waste. Of course it also helps to keep the cost (and hop fully the price) of the pen down.

The original Jotter didn’t have a metal tip, brother Sean.

Hi Esty, Ferocity, et al,

It is very ironic that I received THIS in today's mail:

I bought a canary yellow Jotter fp/bp set and I noticed the bp has the chrome tip!!! :o

It seems it was the British Series that came without the chrome tip; perhaps not the regular series - unless they recently brought it back because they heard me complaining about it.

Dear Sean,

I suspect the original plastic, untipped, were prone to cracking. Congratulations on your new yellow Jotter.

I use these in my old Jotter and P45 flighter

Hi Bob,

I suspect the same thing myself; the ribbed plastic  barrel experienced cracking issues. Thank you. :)   I think the modern  British Series came with aluminum bodies and didn't need the reinforced tip; whereas the standard Jotters have plastic bodies and come with metal tip.

I haven't tried OHTO refills; I'm happy with the Monteverde Ceramic Gel refills. I used to use the Schmidt EZ Flow 9000 refills, but I find the Monteverde's even smoother - and with a great color range. :D

Well here is Richard Binder's take posted on Facebook a few days ago.   Please excuse that it is a screen shot so it is not linkable but I thought this may add to the discussion.

Hi Dparker999,

Thank you for posting this. Ironically, I came to the same conclusion myself this morning while I was plowing snow. :D

I was thinking about the Deluxe and I thought, why pay $250 for the Deluxe when I get a gold nibbed original in decent condition for less. (I recently purchased a burgundy Custom SET for $50 less in mint condition from a well-respected 51 dealer).

I do depart from Richard in that i do not see the threaded cap and the C/C filling system as a BAD thing; personally, I prefer them both. I like pens that dont have perpetual rub marks on the sections and are super easy to flush.

I see the base model as the better bargain- especially if you can get a deal on it. I bought mine at Pen Chalet for $58, (with 10% off and ink drop bucks).

I'm anxious to try it out to see what the Core model is worth to me, but I had already decided the Deluxe model is a bit overpriced; although,... good luck finding an original Plum Custom for $250. :D

Thanks, Dparker999, for sharing that opinion.

It is another one based on pics so far... but useful anyway...

All the best is only beginning now...

Good point, Sean :)

Last November I bought P51 Burgundy with Rolled Gold cap in NOS/impeccable condition (with chalk marks) for £150 ($200) that was well below £199 price for "new" Deluxe version here in the UK...

All the best is only beginning now...

Well, I feel complete satisfied that Mr. Binder agrees with me.......................LOL.

However, Parker isn't making these for me or Richard. What is the market for these new models? Who knows.

Interesting position.

So X Pen Manufacturer should only make exact reproductions of pens that they made 40+ years ago or they shouldn't make anything.

How about only in the same colors?
Using only the original materials?

Products evolve, we may not like the changes, but we owe it to 1) the manufacturer to be able to improve their product, lower costs, and/or both, 2) the revised product to succeed or fail on it own merits and flaws, and 3) other buyers (new/or vintage) to decide for themselves the appeal/value of a product.

No - but the Quality Position of a product should NOT decrease!    The original 51 was a premium product.    The new 51 is NOT - much like a mid-priced Parker45!

So you have one then.  Great!

Well, I've been so informed that my teal 51 has been checked through the Phoenix post office and is enroute to me. Sufficed to say, I'm beginning to salivate like Pavlov's dogs. :D

Richard Binder: "Given that you can buy a real Aerometric 51 in really good shape for half the price why would you blow your money on this new thing?"

Given that logic why does anyone cares for making fountain pens at all today, if we can all just buy vintage ones.

I could agree with that if this new 51 was a limited edition aimed at collectors - but it clearly isn't, especially the standard steel nib version.
